Spoilers Jupiter Legacy - New Netflix Show

It doesn't get as graphically violent as the Boys or as funny as the Boys.

I actually think it's probably a better representation of 'our world' if super powers were introduced than maybe any of the other 'grittier/realistic' type superhero stories.

The actual super-hero battles and stuff in the show are kinda average and lackluster. The discussions about the code, about fears of totalitarianism, etc... Capitalism vs Socialism. Those actually felt more like the kind of discussions you'd have in our world if with Superheroes thrown into it.

But when you have a show about superheroes and the actual 'superhero parts' are not really that exciting... Well that's probably why you don't get too much traction.

 

The pacing of the show is off, plus a lot of stuff they spend a lot of time on could be significantly shortened. They make a big deal about one character breaking the code, then he's barely on for the rest of the season.

 

You know, you probably could cut this show in an 1 hour and half movie without losing anything interesting.

 

I actually think I read Mark Millar wanted to do it as a movie, but someone else convinced him there was like 40 hours worth of content for 5 seasons.

 

What they tackled in 8 episodes was worthy of 8 episodes, they just blew the execution and focused on the wrong things.

 

The original comic was a fun and quick reading, here everything seems so incredibly overblown. For example, in the comic the quest for the island were just few not-intrusive pages. In the tv show what, half of the run time?

EDIT and if they are loosely following the comics' plot, now they are at the end of issue #2. Perhaps they will catch up with the end of the first mini series (five issues) at the season 4 or 5.

 

I'm just starting it now.. So far, I'm liking it. It's grounded and realistic in a Watchmen kind of way, if the Watchmen had superpowers. I'm not a big fan of the kids, but then again, I can certainly see why they are the way they are.

 

Finished this yesterday. For the most part I enjoyed it. I have quibbles, and one of those was that the season was too short, because the ending felt rushed.

The major twist in the ending came off as too much of an exposition dump and wasn't well-executed from an action perspective either.

Years back, I read the first graphic novel so I knew where it was heading to some extent so I was impatient throughout a good deal of the series to get there, because in my recollections, they got there pretty quickly in the graphic novel.

I also felt the flashback scenes, though mostly well done, did go on too long and stopped the forward momentum of the series. There was more effort put into the flashback scenes and that resulted in not learning much about the new generation of heroes, except for Chloe and the roguish son of Skyfox. We did get some glimpses of Brandon and his inner torment but they could've put more focus on him than they did, same with the other younger heroes. I wouldn't have minded a 10-12 episode first season so that all the older heroes could get dedicated episodes and there would be enough space to beef up the younger heroes as well.

I also wished that the heroes had more clearly defined, and different power sets. I didn't really care for them all being able to fly. If this was a Justice League analogue or pastiche, I would've liked them to really stick to that. I thought the action scenes were so-so. I really liked the first episode fight against Blackstar, and the flying and landing effects, but after that it got really iffy for me and sometimes not good. Perhaps the best effect was for Baryon. Really liked his look.

I liked the costuming for the most part as well. While some muscle suits were better than others, I liked the designs for most of them.

I did like this first season better than Steven DeKnight's first season of Daredevil. He does have pacing issues when it comes to his works, though here, the heroes were in costumes from jump and I was glad for that.

 

I really, really disliked the parts in the past. In the original comics just few pages were dedicated to it.

 

I've just finished this as well. While I enjoyed it overall, especially the twist at the end, I will agree that the segments in the past seemed overly long as soon as they reached the island. I did actually enjoy the segments in the past, and would enjoy seeing more of their progression as heroes during that time period. I look forward to season 2!

 

They should've gotten to the island sooner. There was a lot of fat they could've trimmed. If they were going to spend that much time in the past, show them being superheroes making themselves known to the world instead of just talking about it.

 

Then all those absurd discourses on ethics.

My God, someone please explain to me why

1) stopping your average supervillain is good
2) stopping Hitler is bad

 

Just an excuse to explain why in a world with superheros none of them stopped Hitler.

 

At least in the Dc Universe they had a valid excuse.

"You know, we tried, but Hitler had the Spear of Destiny so..."

But in this tv show universe? What mental gymnastic could ethically justify that you could stop the horrors of Auschwitz and you did nothing? I'm really curious.

 

Fake bad guy had already killed three superheroes, was going to kill Utopian and then explode or something which would've taken out half region, and Utopian still thinks killing him was wrong? The code might've worked better if it had been supers can't kill non-supers. Or if they had shown where this code came from, like Sheldon serving in the war or something. Or if they showed the fallout with Skyfox and maybe that involved a lot of death.

And given Millar's total lack of talent (beyond the ability to con people into thinking he has talent) I expect this will be the fate of anything else of his they make.

 

Was more interested in what happened to Skyfox than Brainwave turning bad. Oh well. No big loss.

 

Season one finished with a twist, not an ending. Fucksake Netflix.

 

If they canceled it this quickly the viewing numbers must’ve been pretty bad. Though if that’s the case why order a new series set in this universe?
