Not transcripts or someone's interpretation, but the actual scripts.

    Good one.

    One thing from each script.

From Court Martial I'm looking for the short speech from Commodore Stone that begins with "Not one man in a million..."

From The Ultimate computer, I'm looking for the description of the wargame attack fleet.

    Can you help me ouot?

Here's what's on the 10/3/66 change page of the 9/23/66 revised final draft script. Note that some of this material was removed during editing.

You're going to have to be more specific. Are you referring to the first time the Lexington and Excalibur appear? Exterior shots? Interiors?

Thanks for the Court Martial stuff, What I'm looking for here is how the ships are described as the first appear on the screen. I realize that there's a little vagueness there, so how about this. When we first see all for ships on the screen, how does the script describe them?

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the Library of Congress. While I'd love to check it out, I don't think a visit to Minneapolis is in my immediate future :luvlove: For future reference, do you have any idea what kinds of things they have aside from scripts?

Re "The Ultimate Computer": pretty much this is all the description there is in the draft I have with the cover date of Dec 5, 1967 "Final Draft" but the pages are dated 12-6-67 and the filename is 12-13-1967 (because it has later dated page revisions).

Reading through the memos it seems like the idea to have starship battle at the end came from the staff, and Fontana suggested they use the Botany Bay:

The memos make clear writer Laurence N. Wolfe's script was sent to the show by Ray Bradbury, and the staff had a bunch of suggestions on it. Wolfe's rewrite was deemed insufficient and failed to execute the requested changes, and so Fontana rewrote the script. Wolfe mailed Roddenberry to complain, and the Bird replied that it would be up to WGA arbitration to determine the final credit. And, Stan Robertson at NBC complained about the process...

In the final draft (not the revised final draft), the speech is longer:

Nineteen months? Interesting. That would have put season 1 in the second year of the 5-year mission, had it been left in.

Unless WNMHGB is significantly before the rest of the first season.

How is that an "unless?" That's entirely consistent with what I said. "Court Martial" came about halfway through the first season (in production order), so if it were 19 months into the mission, that would suggest, as I said, that there was an entire unchronicled year before season 1 -- plenty of room for the second pilot.

Although I'm convinced that WNM is before the 5-year mission. I mean, the 5-year mission was a general frontier patrol, survey, and colony support tour, but in WNM, they were specifically on a mission to probe beyond the "edge" of the galaxy -- a journey that in and of itself would probably have taken months there and back, not even counting whatever they were supposed to do beyond the edge. That feels like a separate kind of assignment. And the ship clearly underwent substantial refitting and crew replacement between the pilot and the series, which is far more likely to happen between missions than during one.

Commodore Stone's scripted line supports that -- he says Kirk's spent 19 months on "this last mission," meaning Kirk's had earlier, different missions. And the series bible and The Making of Star Trek said that Kirk had been captain of the Enterprise for about 4 years as of the second season, which would mean he was its captain for 2-3 years before season 1 -- or 1-2 years before the start of "this last mission" per Stone's line. These days, we tend to assume that Kirk's command of the E was limited to the 5-year mission (and TMP clearly assumed that, with Kirk's line about "my five years out there"), but that was not what TOS's makers intended at the time.

I'm pretty sure that WNMHGB is part of season 1. However, I also agree with your analysis of it having taken place well before the rest of the season.

In broadcast, not in production. Nor in substance, given the clear differences.
