Spoilers "Supergirl": the 6th and final season

It would be nice if they could just put background extras in the Phantom Zone in different Kryptonian costumes. From across many different media. Simple black suits from the Donner film and the more advanced armor from the Snyder film, etc, etc. That would be something that would not even require specific actors or characters.

I'm not sure how the Arrowverse's Phantom Zone went from "area in actual space" to "pocket dimension", but we are where are.

First hints of that was last season with J’onn’s brother being a prisoner and using a Phantom Zone projector to send prisoners there and release. All which was before Crisis even happened. Early this season, premiere maybe ?, Kara mentioned Fort Rozz in relation to the Phantom Zone. Seemed a callback to season 1 but the details do not really match at all. I will have to rewatch that. Also Fort Rozz was destroyed in season 3.

This is what I was referring to in the Superman and Lois thread on it’s inconsistency with Supergirl’s version of Krypton. Supergirl itself has slowly changed Krypton. Particularly the Phantom Zone. In the early seasons it was just an area of space where time stood still. Where prisoners had to be sent on a prison ship. Which seemed a little inspired by Man of Steel. But in the last few years it became closer to the comics version in which prisoners can be sent by a projector alone.

Is Argo no longer a thing? Kara mentions she and her mysterious cousin are all that is left.

Kara told her father that her mother is still alive and Argo survived because he saved the city before putting himself in the Phantom Zone.

There are ways of reconciling different descriptions of the Phantom Zone if you want. That where Kara and Fort Rozz entered was a bridge in normal space that only occasionally existed to the Zone. Also as a child she did not fully understand how it worked.

They're still keeping the action largely indoors, on standing sets. The Phantoms are spreading, but we don't see them until they converge on the tower. We didn't even see them capture Silas's Phantomized roommates.

Lena quitting LuthorCorp is a decision that makes sense in terms of the personal reasons she gave, but it's dangerous to leave Lex free to do what he wants with the company. She may be right that his hubris will be his downfall, but he could drag a lot of other people down along the way. Anyway, I'd read that Lena was going to become a full member of the "Superfriends" this season, and I guess this is how they set that up.

When Alex was despairing and then we learned that the Phantoms induce misery in their hosts, I thought it was going to turn out that Alex was possessed too. I'm glad they didn't go that route, that they let her depression be a genuine emotion she had to work through.

You know what just occurred to me. In the last episode, Brainy said that all the phantom zones from all the multiverse converged into one after Crisis. That means everyone who was sent there in all the DC mediums are in one place. What big villain do we know is there? Faora from Man of Steel. Make it happen Supergirl. :)

Rather, he said the opposite of that -- while the main universes (at least a few of them) converged into one, the Phantom Zone split from one into many. So now it's a multiverse (or a multi-pocket-universe) when it wasn't before. It's fragmented into mini-Zones, and that's why they can't find Kara.

She said, in telling her backstory, that she grew up believing she and Clark were the only ones left. She was speaking of the past, not the present. She brought it up to give context for what it meant to her to find her father alive.

Were they using the Supernatural sets? That medical room looked at a lot like their bunker.

Just as the quality of Supergirl’s storytelling has fallen sharply since its superb fourth season, so has its attention to continuity. Remember how it was treated as a big deal last year when Kara took Lena to the Fortress, as if she were revealing its existence to Lena for the first time? Apparently nobody realized that Lena had already been there back in Season Two. :shifty:

I just hope the final episode of the series doesn't have Kara end up in the same place that both DCAU Supergirl and Smallville Supergirl did.

Funny you should say that, because the moment I heard about the series ending, I thought a possibility would be for SG to long for a relationship with Mon-El, and considering where he is, that means....

Actually, I think that would be a pretty good way to end the series, and a logical payoff to all the Legion setup over the years. She could always come back for guest appearances in other shows.

Watching Lena and Lex's interactions this week, it occurred to me: It would be interesting to go back and rewatch (as I will at some point) the early seasons of the show, when a number of "Superman family" characters were frequently invoked but had not yet appeared. James talking about Clark, or Cat dissing Lois, or Lena discussing Lex -- back before we could put Hoechlin's and Tulloch's and Cryer's faces and characterizations to those names. Seems to me it'll change the flavor of those scenes and add a new layer to rewatching them.

I was just thinking that I wish they'd go back to the season 1 trope of Kara and Clark texting each other regularly, and if they alluded to it in both shows. It would be a way to show a connection between them without the need for actor/crew mixing.

Damn, they were good choices to play young Kara and Alex
Amazing choices. I've said before, I can (and sometimes do) consciously call "Midvale" to mind while watching present-day Kara and Alex interact, and I find it actually enhances my sense of them as people and of their shared personal history.

"Midvale" is a good episode, but I'm not as personally enamored with it as other people seem to be because I feel like it unnecessarily retconned previously-established elements of Kara and Alex's personal history.

Having said that, however, I am intrigued by the decision to revisit the same general time period as the flashbacks in that episode, this time through time travel.

Supergirl - The Final Season
Season 6 - episode 4 - "Lost Souls"

SG/Kara / Zore-El / Nyxlygsptlnz: One good part of this sequence was the purposely cutout-esque mountain and cloud backgrounds in the Phantom Zone. Being that artificial made it seem very alien in appearance.

At first, the quick change of expression on Zor-El's face (watching Kara's) as he explained what happened to his ankle seemed like he and Nyxlygsptlnz were up to something, since it was clear both were not forthcoming about what happened when SG was searching for the mirror (until Nyxlygsptlnz finally dropped her side of the story).

Alex / Lena / Brainy. et al.: The writers are not even trying (well, that's not new for that bunch); there was much plot convenient moments, producing timely inventions out of thin air, and rattling off explanations about something they should not know so much about, that it all seemed like busy work for the week.

Nia/Dreamer: As expected, her visions continue to tease the upcoming Midvale episode. That was the biggest bit of plot advancement in this episode.

NOTES:
The phantoms...eh. Not once did they ever feel like a threat. More like a placeholder.

GRADE: C-.

I'm surprised they brought back the "My name is Kara Zor-El" opening sequence. We haven't seen that in quite some time, though they updated it with new images. I wonder if the episode ran short.

I thought this one worked pretty well. I still find it awkward that the Phantom attacks on the populace only happened offscreen while the focus stayed firmly on the heroes, but I guess that's because of COVID restrictions. At least they effectively managed to problem-solve and work their way to a solution without Supergirl. Dreamer creating a tunnel of force for Alex/Sentinel to run through was particularly clever.

I figured Lena's withdrawal from LuthorCorp last time meant she'd be joining the Superfriends full-time, and it's effective to see her growing pains. It's nice that what put her in conflict with the others was her love for Kara and her need to atone, rather than something more devious.

Alex's eye makeup in Sentinel mode just does not work for me. It makes her look very strange.

So Nyxly turns out to be evil after all. And probably indestructible. I guess now we know why Peta Sergeant is credited as a regular instead of a guest star. Is she the season's big bad?
