What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Back to Trek:

VOY Season 1's first handful of episodes were the strongest freshman offerings of any Trek series since TOS and that was more than 28 years earlier. VOY was - thus far - one of only two Trek series that started stronger than it ended.

I agree. Most series had some difficulty hitting their stride, but VOY started out quite strongly, even if they made some mistakes (there were some weak episodes, and perhaps too little in the way of crew conflict). But when looking at Season 1, you can see they really tried to do something new. They may have failed in that, but at least, in the first season they tried, as contrasted to the feel I got from later seasons - sticking to what they knew worked.

My own contribution - and I don't know whether this is controversial or not - is that I think that even though I think DS9 was the strongest series, it veered too much into 'soap opera' territory sometimes in its later seasons. For example, I could have done without the Ezri/Bashir/Worf love triangle (for lack of a better term), and while I didn't mind the ventures into the love lives of our main characters, I thought there sometimes was a bit too much of it. I don't watch Star Trek for that stuff, in the end.

Actually, Voyager's weakest episodes are in Season 2, IMO.

The awful "Threshold" for example. I mean even the ending is kinda psychotic-like Janeway speaking of her children and not having any second thought about leaving them on the planet. I wonder why the doc never tried to turn them into human babies, using the same bullshit procedure he used to return Janeway and Paris to their human form?

Yeah, that was some crappy episode, on so many levels!!!
Their babies were never humans, I think that´s the reason why it was impossible.

When Chak summarily decided to leave them on the planet he had no way of knowing that. So we don't know if it was impossible unless we posit that Chak is some kind of physician genius magician who can know things without having to do any research or consult with the doctor.

I'm sure they could have tracked the babies down again if they'd needed to, using ship sensors.
After all, they were they only ones of their kind on the planet!

Plus, even though Chakotay said in the log that he decided to leave them on the planet, he could very well have had a conversation with Janeway and Paris about them, and they all decided to let them stay.

This raises the question of how they were able to determine if the babies had the potential of becoming human babies if they never performed any tests on them? Plus since these were babies how did they know that they could fend for themselves? I remember Tom and Neelix risking their lives to feed an alien lizard-like baby because they weren't sure if it could survive. I guess it's lucky the baby wasn't related to either of them or they would have just left it there.

Isn’t that basically what happened in DS9 S7. Everyone was signed for 6 seasons and when they went to negotiate for a 7th Farrell was they only one not really interested. So they gave her the take it or leave it offer and she left it.
The rumor back in the day was that Farrell was the one who wanted a raise, and was the one clamoring for it. The powers that be chose to make her an example and give everyone but her a raise.

Plus we never see footage of her again in the entire season not even in flashbacks, which was kinda weird. Doc Brown would say: "Erased from reality!!!".

It was the most total erasure of a previous actor playing the role since the switchover from Dick York to Dick Sargent. I don't think York was ever again shown in flashback footage.

I don't think it was done against York as I believe he left the show against his will, because of sickness (his back hurt terribly I think) but because it would have been weird to see two different actors playing the same role in the same episode! The situation is of course different with Farrell as her role was not recast.

Hey, I'm new here. Why not post some controversial stuff!?

1) I hate how cartoony Klingons became in TNG and DS9. They became goofy parodies of themselves, IMO. Lursa and B'Etor are prime examples here.
2) TMP is pretty decent despite terrible costumes and tortuously long effects shots on entering V'ger.
3) Seven of Nine had some decent episodes, but was an overall drag on the show. The skin tight suits are just ridiculous. All the Borg stuff really demystified and defanged one of Star Trek's great villains.
4) Data is not all that great. I like the character okay.... but I found his storylines pretty trite and I find myself dreading Data-centric episodes on re-watch.
5) Gates McFadden is enitrely unconvincing.
6) The Ent-D is a terrible design. Always has been. And I say that as someone who developed a nostalgic attachment to it.
That's a start.... hello all!

About Data: How do I hate that episode! I think its title is "In Theory" where Data apes a relationship... What an embarrassing piece of trash really. I only watched it once because I refuse to inflict that on myself again but even that one time was one too many!!! Plus the often-repeated phrase "I've programmed myself to...". Enough already!!! Anyway, I usually can only take Data in small doses. I'd rather watch two TNG Ferengi episodes than one where Data plays a prominent role. I mean things like Data never understanding a colloquialism and then using it with the wrong words is really old as far as I am concerned.

I bid you welcome and I agree with most of it, so you're off to a great start in my book.

You won't get much controversy from me. ;)

The Doctor Crusher character is really ill-conceived the way she keeps winning about things even when she doesn't have an alternative solution to propose is annoying.

Plus when she says that she'll keep Worf restrained to keep him from killing himself. I mean seriously why not keep him in stasis? That way she can keep him "alive" forever! Idiot!

On one hand, you have Picard who will gladly watch a whole planet die without lifting a finger, and on the other, you have Crusher who'll get the ship in jeopardy because she can't let a single borg die but who won't say anything in the case of the whole planet!!!

The rumor back in the day was that Farrell was the one who wanted a raise, and was the one clamoring for it. The powers that be chose to make her an example and give everyone but her a raise.

i think there has been so much back and fourth...he said/she said that we’ll never know the true story about how/why she left, what exactly was said, etc...

TNG movie era suffered due to the exclusive focus on Picard and Dara. We could have had some great odd number movies if the focus had been shifted to others in the ensemble. Imagine a Worf focused movie...
