Hey, I never noticed that before....

Even that's show's acronym is way too long.

Yeah, we should stick to TLAs.

But in the TOS timeline how long had the "treaty" been in existance? And were the years referred in terms of unusual short Klingon years?

"Years" would go against the idea combo where these are Earth years and a season of TOS is a year long, what with the Organian adventure being at the tail end of season one and Kang meeting Kirk before the midpoint of the third season. But stardate-wise there is less of a problem, because the treaty would follow events from SD 3200 or so, and Kang would be mouthing off about three years in a stardate-free adventure surrounded by ones past the SD 5500 mark, giving 2+ years by the 1,000 SD/yr gold standard.

Yet it's clear the Klingons, too, are also sprouting a lot of nonsense in that episode, due to being under influence. While our meek heroes engage in hatespeak and fearmongering, the effect on Klingons might be the opposite: they suddenly rant and rave about adhering to treaties and being victimized...

Yeah...does GF man girlfriend of gluten free? Depends on who you're talking to.

Yeah. When I've been out with friends and some one says they're going to the ATM, I was always like "Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, it's forgivable to go to the ATM."...

Some abbreviations are quite standardized, especially in appropriate contexts. Here, TOS is. TOS episode title abbreviations aren't, though.

It's a game, really, finding the minimum-effort way to distinguish between the titles. Say, when in need of a transcript, you'd google for "chakoteya" + keyword to get to Chrissie's excellent site. Can you find a unique keyword? (Complicating this is that among the hits returned will be Doctor Who titles, too!)

I, too, have been scratching my head at a few of these abbreviations.

We Sherlockians use an "official" abbreviation system for the original Sherlock Holmes stories. All short stories have 4 letter abbreviations. All novels have 5 letter abbreviations. And they are usually based on a single key word.

Examples: STUDY = A Study in Scarlet; SCAN = "A Scandal in Bohemia."

True, we have fewer to juggle. There are only 60 total original tales.

How else can I find the episode without an acronym?

I once proposed that we on this board use the fan-official, published abbreviation system for TOS and TAS episodes. I even posted images clearly listing them all out for easy reference. But I got shot down from all directions.

Too many fans are either too young to have experienced 1970s fandom, or just never bought the Concordance. They don't get it, never will, and we just have to accept that.

Maybe we should just use our keyboards to type out the full words? Then everybody understands 100% of the time what we are talking about?

For this audience, that's the most practical thing.

I'm just nostalgic for the standardized, case-sensitive, two and three-letter symbols from the Star Trek Concordance. They were reiterated in the June 1977 issue of All About Star Trek Fan Clubs, and probably elsewhere. They were a fixed, widely held list of abbreviations, and because of their mnemonic aspect, once you knew them, they were yours for life. It was exactly how scientists worldwide know the elements of the Periodic Table.

But those days are gone, and they're not coming back. We don't have a common shorthand, and we're at a point where the overall franchise has 797 TV episodes. So we should spell out enough of each episode title to make it unmistakable. And if it's not TOS or TAS, it's nice to say the whole title and at least abbreviate which series it's from.

Thanks to your post I did look up Star Trek: Concordance.

I have to confess, had I been a fan then, a book with some archaic wheel mounted reference system built into the front cover (itself designed like a starship dish) I would have loved it.

Funny how in those times there were 79 episodes (not counting TAS) and in 2021 there's 797. I don't think any fan in those fallow days could have dreamed of such a thing.
