If not the California-Class...

...then what ship would you imagine as the hero ship for Lower Decks?

For me, given the mission profile of the Cerritos, I always see the Miranda-Class as being a most likely substitute.

Anyone else? Or are there other ship classes you'd see in its place?

The Miranda class fits the role well, agreed.
Imho, it doesn’t have enough physical decks for the joke from ep1 to work. Low, scrappy underdogs.

In addition to the Miranda, the class might be one of the Galaxy-inspired Wolf 359 victims, for added TNG tie in factor. I’m thinking Freedom class (funny looking), or Challenger class.

Definitely one of the DS9TM kitbashes in order to take silly advantage of the setup provided in live action:

1) A ship like that exists in the continuity;

2) A ship like that isn’t one we’d ever spend too much time on in live action;

3) Since it was designed for deep background, it is questionable if the ship exists quite like that, if we’re to be completely serious.

LD, on the other hand, could go all the way and incorporate every bit of fan research in order to have fun with the design. Say the hero ship is of the Intrepid-class variant: suddenly all the times where it’s next to DS9 in stock footage take on new significance. You could even postulate that it wasn’t always the same ship (Yeager), but instead retcon your particular vessel into a number of specific episodes, which discerning fans would have to identify. How? Well, some of the crew of the hero ship would be modeled after the background extras on the Promenade, and now we’d have to spot them.

excelsior class.
A ship that has been around.. Forever, and in constant need of fixing. And is NOT a plum assignment. A ship that does 2nd or 3rd contact, that is there for a month or 3 to set up a fresh water source, zipping from a not new planet to old starbase. Nothing new, nothing exciting.

Wouldn’t work as well, since the Excelsior class could always appear in live action with any LD silliness removed. However, if you were to take a kitbash based on it instead, then there’d be room for all kinds of interior oddities to match the Frankenstein exterior.

Ordinarily I'd say the Shelley class (that weird Excelsior/Miranda hybrid, i.e. the USS Curry) but upon reflection I'd rather see that ship as the Starfleet Marine troop transport I first envisioned.

Me, I say keep the California. It looks just weird enough to fit the tone of the series. And besides, isn't the show made in California? ;)

That said, I also like the Parliament class. I'd be up for another guest shot. And I totally love the fact that in the sole ship of that class we've seen so far (USS Vancouver) all of the shuttles are named for various neighborhoods in Vancouver. ;)

(Actually I think they do that for the Cerritos as well - all of its shuttles are named for various locations in California)

Hi, I'm Timo. I'm a Yeah-Ger. Have been ever since I first saw the kitbash. I know there are others out there, too. I know this is supposed to help, this sharing, relating. But I also know it doesn't work. I can never live a normal Nay-Ger life.

I just adore the Yeager. She's to the Intrepid exactly what the Miranda is to the Constitution: a clunkier counterpart, with drooping nacelles and a boxy ass and weird megaphaser doodads and no deflector to speak of. I love her to bits anyway. Regardless. Because.
