Star Wars love/hate relationship

JesterFace

I just feel like I must express these feeling to others who might like this kind of entertainment, sorry.

You might know what Star Wars is. It can bring up powerful feelings just like many other series or movies.

Right now, I really don't like Star Wars. Many here might know the story; watching Star Wars growing up, loving it. Over time Star Wars has gotten not so good.

I recently rewatched episodes 7, 8 and 9 after a while. 7 was okay I guess but the other two.... What a load of shit. If you like them that's okay, for some reason it feels like I have to vent a little bit, sorry. I think Rian Johnson ruined the entire franchise.

These movies have been discussed here before I sure but I'd like to know what do you think? Star Wars, so much wasted potential. Why is this bothering me so much? Come to think of it, the only really good movie in the series is 'The Empire Strikes Back'. However, I really like Star Wars - Battlefront game from 2004, nostalgy kicking in.

Fortunately, Star Trek feels even better. :)

How?

What did he do that takes away from the OT? Honestly. If the ST is so bad, as many claim, then it is worth ignoring. Ruination implies that something has been permanently damaged. Yet, the OT still plays out just fine.

Star Wars was wasted potential the moment Leia became Luke's sister. So, that's not new for me.

And the original SW was the best. Empire is only OK because of ROTJ.

Well, he made episode 8. It's pretty hard to skip it if you want to watch the entire story. That movie is really, really bad.
For me the whole story is 4, 5, 6. The rest is a legendarium. Enjoyable but ultimately not important. So, again, what was ruined? Because I can watch the OT unhindered by the ST or the PT.
Is this where I talk about my obsession with AT-AT walkers? Cause it's getting worse year by year.
Go for it. I would recommend watching IMPS: Episode 2.

You'll find as many opinions as there are fans.

For what it's worth I agree with some of your post. Only for me Rian Johnson made the only worthwhile sequel - I think it's really good. Episodes 7 and 9 are abject shit.

Star Wars (as it was called in 1977) blew my teenaged mind and changed my life. I love the original trilogy. Even ROTJ.

The prequels...are better than some of the sequels. Rogue One is great, Solo is...O.K. I don't like Clone Wars, Rebels and the other one.

So as you can see, it's a mixed bag for me. If it wasn't for Last Jedi and the wonderful Mandolorian I'd have given up and parted company with Star Wars a while ago.

GAWD, you two are going to regret it!:lol:
I was part of a SW fan club for years. I highly doubt it.

See, I don't get this. It's not like if I don't like something (like the Clone Wars) the stuff I do like stops being likable? Does it?:wtf::weep::crazy:

No, not at all. You don't stop loving the good bits just because some of it is crud.

By parted company with Star Wars I don't mean the films I still love, I mean I would have abandoned the new instalments in the franchise like I did with the novels during the Vong war. I Just stopped following them.

Ah. Thank you for the clarification.

Also, I never followed the books. So SW stopped for me after Episode 3. Until the enjoyment of the ST.

I never cared much for the sequels. Rise of Skywalker was, IMHO, the worst of the lot, especially the bit about Rey being Palpatine's granddaughter.

That said, I was genuinely creeped out by the scenes on Exegol, esp. the Sith fleet. Although I'm forced to wonder where all those 'rebel' ships came from in the final battle...

The prequels used to be my favorite SW films until I saw Rogue One. That is now my favorite ST film, and in fact one of my favorite films of all time. I have no explanation for this.

I really didn't care for the new trilogy, very much. It's a mess. I liked Finn and Poe. That's about it. I wanted to like the movies. Maybe I am just satisfied with the old EU and don't need it. I don't like what they did with old characters in the name of tearing down old myths. Star Wars was all about myths. Without it you've got.. well. a mess. I've never rewatched 7, 8, or 9.

I also like Rogue One quite a bit, and I really like Phantom Menace, despite a few flaws, so I am weird that way.

Star Wars was all about myths
And that's why Luke works perfectly. Thematically he is exactly the type of story I would expect from old mythology and classical literature. "Happily Ever After" is a relatively new invention in terms of popularity and expectation in the story.

Now, that's not to say people have to like Luke's presentation. Certainly it was difficult to watch. But, maybe I was ready for it because I had that shock with Three Musketeers and then reading Man in the Iron Mask. Or reading the original Robin Hood after watching the Disney film. Storytelling and myth have not always been happy in my experience. I don't think Johnson was tearing down old myths. I think he was going back to a time where myths were not always happy.

About Rise of Skywalker, I have a question, though...

Am I correct in assuming that Palpatine's son was actually a clone of him? I can't see Palpatine ever having a normal family life, with a wife and kid.

Also, do we know at what point Palps Jr. 'broke character' and turned against his father?

Yes, I believe Palpatine's son was just a clone, but rebelled due to the whole soul transference thing.

Sequel Trilogy was just a holodeck program made by Riker to work on a problem he was dealing with. He ran out of ideas and ended it and chose to look into past history instead.

Since we didn't see Riker I'm going to go with no...maybe it was written by Mariner.

If more ST films come out, I really hope they keep Palpatine dead. I never liked the thought of bringing him back in the first place, Shit, does anyone ever truly DIE in the SW universe?

No. Why would they? We had Sith spirits, Palpatine clones, Palpatine's return and various magic in the EU. It's mythology. Why would be stay dead?

I just don't like the thought of a bad guy so powerful that he literally can never die. Just makes things seem so hopeless. :(
