Author Sariah Wilson recently interviewed Rian Johnson, and she says that he told her his Star Wars trilogy is still going to happen, he just has other stuff he's going to do first.
I have to admit, when we didn't hear about this during the big announcement of the upcoming series and movie, I had started to doubt this was still going to happen. I'm happy it is, I liked what Johnson did in The Last Jedi, and I look forward to seeing what he can do when he isn't limited by working on the middle movie in a trilogy started by someone else.

I'll believe it when I see it. I would love for it to be true. Would be fantastic news and something I would gladly watch.

Maybe he can have it turn out that Luke was actually a drug abusing child molester and spend half the movie on a hitherto unknown and uninteresting cousin of Wicket reenact a bunch of hunting scenes from Jeremiah Johnson for no real plot moving reason. The force ghost of Leiah will be brought back long enough to say "I kissed my brother on purpose" before fading away. The 2.1 Order will then blow up a bunch of planets killing 10 trillion people. There will be some odd throwaway gesture to hope. Cue trumpets and fluegelhorns. The end.

I think he got a rough deal with The Last Jedi. Disney's approach was baffling - "Hey, we've paid billions of dollars for this immensely popular, money making behemoth ... we're making a trilogy, right? Cool! Hey, should we plan the three movies out, or ... maybe we'll just wing it and make it up as we go? Okay, let's do that."

I'm all for giving him another shot - provided he's got the reigns from start to finish.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force... as if thousands of manchildren suddenly cried out in frustration, and were suddenly silenced. I fear something wonderful has happened.

They let him do pretty much anything he wanted with the movie though, which is pretty amazing all things considered.

Gender-based insults aside, I doubt it will be remotely as a big a stir as last time. He won't be taking over a story mid-stream and it will (apparently) feature all new characters, so there's no real potential for the ruination of beloved older characters.

It worked out for that George Lucas guy. If you have ever heard of him. He's not well known.

Yup, noting about the original trilogy was planned out,no matter what George Lucas claimed after the fact. Darth Vader wasn't Luke's father until several rewrites of the Empire Strikes Back (originally the Force Ghost of Luke's father was the one who trained him on Dagobah, not Yoda)
And Leia only became Luke's sister in Return of the Jedi because the third movie was going to be the last movie.
Originally Luke's sister was supposed to be a new character, introduced in a hypothetical fourth movie.

That's the reason for stuff like Leia making out with Luke despite her later claiming that she "always knew" or Han declaring that he has never seen any trace of Jedi or the Force, because Star Wars was written as they went along.

Exactly, I respect and understand exactly what Disney was doing, clearly trying to avoid the new trilogy being too "corporate" for lack of a better term. The problem is they went to far the other way. There was no one with an overarching vision in the Lucas role. Abrams should have stayed on to guide the storyline even if he didn't want to direct the other films.

This is true... from a certain point of view.

It's also true that a lot, and I mean a lot, of the story elements and characters were present in some nascent form from the start. Go back and look at the original story ideas from before Star Wars (no bloody episode numbers) was filmed and you'll find many elements that were later mined for all 3 OT movies and maybe even some of the PT elements as well as at least R1.

But yeah, the lack of a coherent theme from start to finish does make for a bit of a mess when you look at the whole.

Yeah the ideas were recycled and yes I'd also say Phantom Menace bears quite a bit resemblance to the early scripts. But there was no "master plan" that included Darth being Luke's father or Leia and him being brother and sister and stuff like that.
From my experience in a lot of creative work you sometimes revive ideas from earlier drafts or version.

But yes you are right a lot of the later developments had origins in initially rejected ideas from the early drafts.

It's never going to happen. I think he likes to bring it up from time to time to just troll his haters for fun. Which many of them on youtube love because it gives them a clickbait "story' to cover.

And I think that's why the ST and Johnson's work in TLJ sit just fine with me. Watching ANH then going to ESB is the tonal shift from solo guitar to full orchestra. There is a distinct feel in the films. So, after reading watching BTS of Lucas' different drafts and themes that ultimately the cohesion comes after the fact, largely owing to how Lucas wove together the elements in ROTJ to connect it all. The ST works OK on that front.

As i said in another thread some time ago, my problem with the sequel trilogy has nothing to do with the quality of the story, or Rey or Finn any of the other stuff a lot of people seem to complain about. My problem was that I felt it was a rethread of the original movies. Which maybe was inevitable, but I still didn't like it all that much.
And, yes I am that sentimental, I didn't like that they basically overwrote the happy ending of the original. If Rey and Kylo had both been Han and Leia's kids (like Jaina and Jacen were in the novel continuity) I would have liked it better, though I already hated Jacen's descend to the Dark Side.

Aside from that, I actually quite like Canon-Welding, the weaving together elements in an ongoing work that originally weren't conceived as connected to make them form a, reasonably, cohesive whole. Tolkien employed it a lot as well and I found it very interesting to see how completely random elements in the early versions of his story came to be tightly connected later on.
It takes skill to pull that off.

I think I would have enjoyed the new films more if Rey wasn't a Palpatine. That part stretched things a bit more than my liking. And her being a Solo would not have made it better, IMHO. But, it would have explained Ben and Rey's Force connection better I suppose.

I used to be OK with the First Order but I truly think a series showing the rise of the First Order would be appropriate, as well as allowing some of that happily ever after to continue for a time.

And I am fully sentimental. I treat the ST as more of a legends or a possibility and not fully canon. Honest, Star Wars has always been the OT to me so anything outside of that is easy to ignore. I personally don't mind revisiting the themes of the original but I can see why people would not like it.
