It's irritates me when people say the Enterprise D was taken out buy a 70 yr old Bird Of Prey

I agree. Even Lursa and B'etor were anxious about fighting the Enterprise "That's a Galaxy-Class Starship, Soran! We're no match for them!" until Soran shared their strategic advantage with them.
 
This is the prime reason I hated Generations. As others have said, the ship clearly wasn't a character but it was a huge part of what the show was. Pointlessly destroying her for the sake of shock value was brutal. I've held a real grudge against Berman for that and I'm not even sure it was his decision.
 
It was an extremely lame end in a lame movie for absolutely no reason. The Enterprise-D was iconic and, even if I like the E, we never had the connection we had with the D. It made Riker look majorly incompetent on every level, he is too busy talking about plasma coils instead of using the firepower of the D to simply overpower them, even without shields they should have won comfortably. I mean I know they were going for "general audiences" as well, but TNG was wildly popular and even as a kid I was really confused as to why Riker wasn't just blowing it the fuck up or rotating shield frequencies because these were things that happened in the show.

We could have had an actual battle ala Yesterday's Enterprise or Khan, but we got some hokey bullshit. They could easily have "re-fitted" the ship between Star Trek 7 and 8 as a result of damage and the changing face of evil. Can you imagine if they destroyed the Millenium Falcon in the new Star Wars movies and replaced it with an "updated" version? Same thing here.

This in absolute spades. The Enterprise-E is a pretty cool looking ship but was anyone emotionally invested in it the same way people were emotionally invested in the D? I can't say I was that bothered by the E being ripped apart in Nemesis but it would've had more shock value (if that's really what they wanted) having parts of the D ripped open and rammed into the Scimitar.

And that's before you analyse how incompetent the whole crew was during Generations. Did no-one seriously think to rotate the shield frequency? Worf spent so much of the series desperate to just start firing phasers and torpedos at anything remotely unknown and he wasn't keen to do the same here? Nah, I don't buy it. Also no-one thought about dumping the core when it was clear it was going to breach? That's exactly what that safety measure is for, is it not?
 
The worst part is that they felt so proud of the special effects that they made us watch the crash twice.
Which, to me, also made it seem like Picard was a dick for not going further back in time when he left the Nexus so he could prevent the crash altogether...
Apparently his ship and the people who died int he crash weren't as important as palling around with Kirk :shrug:

Picard had no idea the ship had crashed.
 
I can only imagine how that conversation must have gone...

I'd have loved to have a seat at the board of inquiry as well.

I thought I read where the powers that be wanted to get a new ship that was created specifically for use in films.I didn't like how the D was destroyed, but I'm not sure if the ship would have lasted beyond Generations as it was.

Yeah, the whole rotating shield frequency was the first thing that many fans (including me) thought of when that happened. The shield frequency thing was even part of one of the most popular episodes of the show, so it's not like it was in some obscure episode that no watches and was easy to forget about.

About the core, did ejecting it ever work in any episode before? It seems the couple of times I remember it couldn't be ejected because of (what I assume) was damage to the ejection mechanism or whatnot. In this case, I don't think it's that big of deal.

It just feels like another thing they forgot to try. The whole thing feels like a middle finger to the fans who bought into the franchise and made it as successful as it was.

Technically, and I always hated this point, but Picard says that no one died in the crash. But, yeah, going back further in time to stop Soren would have saved a lot of grief.
 
I honestly can't think of many occasions it was necessary other than 'Yesterdays Enterprise' and 'Timescape' and the latter was down to the fact the breach was already in progress.
