Mets haven't had much luck hiring people the last couple of years. Beltran last year, Porter this year.
I hated the bastard back in the day, but he sure as Hell could bring some of that "chin music" when needed--he also had a damned good curve-ball-- that would set you back on your heels that he copied from Don Drysdale and "The Barber".

OK, "strike" that, Quintana signs with Oakland. I guess we should still have Alec Mills, so Hendricks, Mills and 3 other guys is now the rotation.
Also, George Springer has signed with the Blue Jays for 6 years, $150M.

The Cubs coughed up Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease for Quintana. Quintana was cost-controlled, which gave the Cubs payroll flexibility to sign Darvish.
And then they traded Darvish for some paper clips and a Subway coupon that the Padres found in a desk drawer somewhere. Meanwhile, Jimenez is going to be an all-world outfielder for the cross-town White Sox.
Hell of a return there, Cubs. Almost as great as giving up Gleyber Torres for a three-month rental of a domestic abuser.
Edit: I also heard on a podcast the other night, it might have been Effectively Wild, that MLB is considering a rule under which each team would get a DH until the starting pitcher is removed, which seems to be a completely non-sensical solution in search of a problem.
At least the domestic abuser was worth a shit and got them to the promised land. Q was never more than average and usually below average, for two top prospects.
I honestly don't know if I'll even watch baseball this year. I've never been what you call a die-hard Cubs fan, but a fan since the late 70's. I managed to wait out those mostly shit Tribune years to see something generations of other Cubs fans never did, but it's just tiring now.
At least the Bears have a "kinda sorta" excuse that they're owned by people with no idea how to run a pro sports team. The Cubs seemingly have all kinds of well qualified people running the show, but that are happy to be mediocre.

I enjoyed listening to his color commentary during Braves games. I will miss him.As a Cardinals fan, I am completely unsurprised by this (on the part of the Cards, at least). But it makes it hard to be disappointed anymore when your team thinks "as is" is good enough.

I thought of that episode, too. I'm going to have to dig out my DVDs and rewatch it.
Hammerin' Hank is pissing off racists in heaven. RIP to a real one. One of the greatest players and ambassadors American sports has ever had. MVP votes every season from age 21 to 39, but only one win (largely because he was unlucky enough to play at the same time as Willie Mays).
But, really, his entire story is incredible. Even just making it out of Mobile would have been a hell of an achievement at the time, but Aaron went on to destroy baseballs for twenty years and change, he played great defense, he even stole bases up to his mid-30s, and he did it all while being a lightning rod for racist assholes. What a god.
If you're a subscriber (c'mon, unlock it, you jackwagons), Joe Posnanski's writeup of Aaron in The Baseball 100 is worth a read.
