New Article about AMT Models

Michigan History Magazine has a new article about AMT models and their Michigan connection (and how ridiculously well they sold). Had some stuff I never knew. And I am a battle-scarred Veterans of the drooping nacelles! Even put a hole in our good table I got so mad, picked up a hammer and went to town.

I'm sure there are AMT memory threads, but feel free to share. I LOVED the bridge and its funky 70s colors display decals (pink and chartreuse IIRC). Never had the D7 oddly.

Order the mag via hsmichigan.org

I can't get the image to insert, so try:

Strangely enough, I think the image on the cover is of the Estes Enterprise rocket, rather than the AMT kit...
I looked inside; it says it's an AMT built by a guy in the Navy while on USS Kitty Hawk, and now in the Smithsonian's collection, donated in 1973.

I built every AMT Star Trek kit, including two of the Enterprise (the second one decaled as the Lexington), two Klingon ships (the second one came molded in black plastic, which I wasn't crazy about), the Romulan, the bridge, the shuttlecraft, the Exploration set (three props), and the Spock figurine. Good times.

Nice article find.

I bet the molds for the TMP electronic Enterprise are in some warehouse in South Bend. Maybe Mayor Pete could find it

I had the exploration set and wore it with my too-small Donmoor shirt in 1979. I had grown since 1974, go figure. I cannibalized the shirt and kept the patch. Wish I still had it.

I also gave my communicator to a friend there, saw it smashed on the ground later.

Used the patch on a gold polo, wore it with my son at '09 premier, he in a home-made Spock tunic. We're actually not big into dressing up, but both movies seemed to deserve it.

I did several AMT's but oddly not all. I had K7 and chose to paint it silver, a very soft, gummy Testors. I think I did one Enterprise as silver. I thought that's what color it was. Now we know GM gray or whatever. I had b/w TV, so close enough.
