I liked this episode quite a bit.

The holo environment breaking down was very creepy and very effective, IMHO. Next Halloween I'm going to change my username to "Anticipated Input".

-1 for the burn being caused by a Kelpian tantrum, though...

My gripe was how did the Emerald Chain know that Stamets runs/interfaces with the spore drive. How did they come up with a perfect device to mind control him to do their whims. And the writers did Tilly a disservice by just having her keep calling down to engineering and nothing else.

What did you think of Osyraa's ship grappling arms? I thought they were kind of cheesy. I mean, no improved tractor beam in the 32nd century?

Maybe the Pakled are behind the Emerald Chain. :D

Also Booker had a stolen Emerald Chain device that they plugged into the ship's central computer and this was how Osyraas' dreadnought could track them across impossibly vast distances (and gave them enough intel or even remote backdoor access, hence why their invasion went like clockwork).

Booker and Discovery were far too impatient to track down the Burn and did not take the Emerald Chain seriously enough, when they're a gaggle of crime syndicates that are quickly transitioning into becoming a real empire and still have access to 31st century super tech.

We're more stupid than the Pakled. They managed to get warp drive and we still haven't.

I hadn't really given them much thought. At the time I thought they were kinda creepy/cool, but once you think about it, it does seem weird a gigantic 31st century ship would use something that primitive, instead of a tractor beam.

Well, it looks like they needed a physical connection to Discovery in order to make use of her Spore Drive, especially if they may have thought it would have taken time to adapt the Spore Drive to the Veridian (although, reverse engineering technology would probably be a piece of cake for 32nd century technology).

In this particular instance, I think the writers just decided to go the stupid route, ignore all tech advancements, and just use grapplers to establish a physical connection to Discovery so they can use it to jump quickly.

That said, Osyraa is quite an idiot... why not simply use Disco to jump to her own HQ, adapt the Spore drive to her entire fleet (if the Emerald Chain even has one) and use it to gain a massive advantage over the Federation (who in all reality should have reversed engineered the Spore Drive by now and implemented it on all of its ships... I mean, come on, the 3 weeks spent on retrofitting the Discovery could have also been used to equip the entire Starfleet with the Spore Drive).

Its as if the writers are just CREATING massive plot holes left and right.

No. It's not the screenwriters who create plot holes, but negative fans come up with other reasons to hate the series. Why, for example, do you even think that a DASH drive can be installed in any ship and more importantly, that the writers think so? Those rotating parts of Discovery are not without reason.

Osyraa strikes as someone who likes big and intimidating. While not 100% pragmatic, she is one big on displays of power.

There is no reason to assume the spore drive can be reverse engineered in a meaningful way and Osyraa has every reason to try and get in to Starfleet HQ as quickly as possible, before Vance is alerted. As is, he is already suspicious of what Discovery is doing.

Because 32nd century technology is magic and can solve any problem without any consideration, right? :vulcan:

I feel like there are massive assumptions on the part of fans that are constantly getting in the way of what the series is actually doing, including a constant feeling of hatred towards these writers for not thinking like fans.

Space tentacles! I love space tentacles.

Reminds me of Godzilla 2000, and we all know how that worked out for them...

Hey it's not all bad there was that TNG episode where 4 Ferengi took over the Federation flagship. Not an army just 4.
True, but that was a one and done episode. Rascals focused on the experiences of the crew as children facing a threat. The Emerald Chain is an ongoing threat, one against which hostilities seem imminent threat. How Discovery and Starfleet responds to them is one of the foremost concerns for the season. In that context, the easy takeover of the ship is a large weakness of the story.

It was a cool effect, something a bit different. It did remind me of Farscape Peacekeeper Wars when Moya got harpooned by pirates.
