I felt they could have done so much more with Tilly's first command... Good episode otherwise. Good to see Doug in the flesh for once.
Tilly was an untrained science track ensign.

Putting her in command of anything other then the night shift during a science run was never going to end well for anybody at this point in her experience.

Her mission was basically sit and wait. The Chain showing was an unexpected event.

Tense drama will usually win out over "world building". Because that sort of world building sucks the life out of a story.

Okay that's one, back in Season One when they could afford extras to make the ship look well manned. ;) That's one crowded bridge! Techs, guards, a blue skirt and a gold skirt wandering about.
FYI - "The Doomsday Machine" was a season 2 TOS episode. :)

A very good episode, hence my rating 10. However, the discussion on this thread is one big facepalm. It is as if most commentators do not watch this episode but know its content from oral stories. Most of the allegations have their answer in the episode ffs.
The facts presented in the episode, which influence the assessment of Tilly's command:
  1. 3 hours to repair the shields to allow the jump
  2. the shields are raised in Red Alert mode
  3. the transport of people from the emerald chain occurs after the transition to the Black Alert
So, as you can see, any criticism of Tilly on this thread is completely misguided.

Tilly absolutely owned the scenes when she was talking to Osyraa. It actually gave the impression that Tilly was working as a captain.

And I realize how un-Trek this sounds, but...if and when Osyraa eats a phaser, I hope Tilly gets to fire it!

Plus the Kelvin Timeline knew about Cardassians as early as 2255 so it's possible that the Prime Timeline had also known of both the Cardassians and neighboring species like the Bajorans by DSC and TOS.

Picard once said that he learned about the Bajorans in third grade. Who knows, some of the DSC crew might also have.

Yep, already covered. "Season One" ends when Coon leaves ( or maybe that's just me :p )
Because I'm a pedantic Star Trek fan, I'm looking for more TOS bridge guards. So far I haven't found any. But updates pending....

Tilly comes off better than Harriman or Esteban.
How so?
Harriman still manages to save a few lives under extremely unfavorable conditions. With help from experienced officers and with losses, but the enterprise still makes a difference and most of the issues are due to her being missing key systems.

Esteban has a scientific vessel that is no match to a bird of prey and is attacked by surprise, there was literally nothing he could have done.

Tilly has a full complement, s fully operational ship and plenty of options, yet her only strategy is cloaking the ship (without changing position!!) and exchanging snarky remark with Osyira and ends up losing the ship,

One of those this cant happen except when it does situation that permeate Star Trek.
when does it happen? The few times I can remember they either had shields down or holes in the shields.

Or the Chain has transporters that can punch through weakened shields.
earth forces can do it as well a few episodes back until Adira distrust their transporter capabilities...It’s still a possible explanation, but One wonders why the Orions have so good ransporters.

We know the Cardassians invaded and occupied Bajor around 2308 and had annexed the planet by 2329 but other than that we have no hard data points(nor even soft ones)for when any species encountered the Bajorans. And the Cardassians may well have known about the Bajorans long before they invaded.
wasn't first contact with the cardsssians mentioned in Unifocation I as happening when Spock was already an ambassador? This would place it not earlier than the late 2200s.

3 hours to repair the shields to allow the jump
since when you need full shields to jump?

Sorry...a terrible filler episode at best.......
Too much technobabble..holograms....over powered enemies.....useless commanding.....or is it just plain old bad writing for one purpose...to drag their feet for the big "showdown"......it is not often that Discovery does that...but please no more episodes like this!

Also notice they say they can’t jump while cloaked...strange thing to remark if they couldn’t jump anyway.

This week's Discovery was OK; great to see Doug Jones without the Kelpian makeup, and all the regulars were great, plus Space Catte yay! OTOH, the whole Burn/Emerald Chain stuff doesn't grab me as much as Empress Gorgeous's arc did, and Osira is a pretty rubbish villain and the actor isn't much good. Bnus points for the almost Blake's 7 Federation uniforms on the Chain though.

Yup. Go big or go home.

To boot, DSC joins DS9 and VOY where The Main Enemy temporarily takes over the ship or station. I liked how "Su'Kal" handled it better than "Basics" but neither will ever touch "Call to Arms". "It's a message from Sisko. He's letting me know: He'll Be Back."
There was also DS9's "One Little Ship."

Tilly was an untrained science track ensign.
She was an engineering (Bronze uniform highlights) cadet in Season One, expressed a desire to be a captain, began to train towards that goal and entered the Command Training Program at the end of that Season.

The best money can buy. They're pirates but not poor pirates.

Not that specifically just a thing that happens in Trek from time to time.
Sorry...a terrible filler episode at best.......
How is it "filler" when it moves various plots forward?
