Spoilers Could there be a reveal in the next episode...

I assume that Starfleet probably told them about shit that happened since they left. But Trekkies overreacting to shit is hilarious.

Vance didn't debrief Discovery on Ni'Var and how Romulans and Vulcans were the same species until they needed to go there and Burnham was used as a way to get SB-19 data.
Burnham displayed a shocked look when Cance said Vulcans and Romulans were the same species.

Its possible that Discovery got debriefed on some points of the past, but as it was pointed out, they did acquire the updated Federation database which covered everything since their point of departure to the 32nd century... so its also possible that Disco crew was told to familiarize themselves with the history of the past 931 years in their own time... or as missions require it (we keep seeing that the crew learns new things on a mission by mission basis, so, its likely no official debrief on the past 900 odd years was given as the info would be in their databases).

Plus, Discovery has pressing things to worry about atm (such as the Emerald Chain and the cause of the Burn). Although it would be good to see the crew take some initiative and mention at some point they've been studying past historical events since arriving in the future.

I think their choice of images implies that the Terran Empire goes back to Ancient Times.

It could go either way. The sword through the planet is shown overtop a bunch of marching Nazi (?) soldiers. So, that would point to WWII as the rise of the empire, which meshes with Edith Keeler being the divergence point.

The Disco MU could be different from the TOS/ENT/DS9 MU, cause Earth itself is actually mirrored in Disco

I just assume they would want to learn in their spare time as part of orientation. After all, I have no doubt that 32nd tech has learning machines that would put Vulcan schools to shame at this point.

It is a 1,000 years of information. I guess he figured they would catch up since they have access to the database, he can tell them anything important if it comes up. So if they bump into Q, he can just be like "Yeah, that's Q for you."

I sheepishly admit I did not think Q when I watched the episode. Though that seems dense on my part now. I also, get Quinn vibes on Carl.

What a dunce I am!

I have a brilliant idea. We all went to school, we have all the information online, we should know it. Let's talk about the world in 1100. Without looking it up. That's cheating.

I'll go first. I don't know anything about 1100! Except that it was during Medieval Times! That's everything I know about it.

Life expectancy was much lower. Rome was a major power, but there were a lot of struggles with power. I believe the Aztecs and Mayans were still in power.

There were rulers who tried to claim legacy with Rome to project power, even the Nazis tried to claim ties to the Romans. It wasn't true, but it's more about rewriting history to suit your new mythology. Makes sense the Terrans would do the same.

Hell, America does it to a lesser extent with the Roman Republic and Ancient Greece since it inspired the founding fathers to some degree.

Empress Matilda! The Anarchy! I think one of the Crusades...

That's all I got. And it looks like I was off by a few decades. So I'm that kind of time traveller who shows up in a Zoot suit to Woodstock.

And now I know this is the Mirror Universe, because I'm allowing myself to sucked into an argument about ENT. There are some things even the Prime Lord Garth wouldn't do.

Don't forget Phlox's line about Shakespeare.

There is no doubt in my mind that Carl is one of the SIX, Guardians of Time based off of Harlan's Ellison's original story concept for the TOS episode City on the Edge of Forever.

I really want nothing to do with Q. Q to me always broke story ideas, and I have no idea why people are so hell bent on wanting Q. People are focused way too much on TNG

It just gives more fuel for the "Church of Nu Trek Sucks", to fuel their hatred. No Q, NO TNG. Please for the love of God.

There was also a tweet from the Trek twitter on the leaks by RMB, telling people don't spoil yourselves from the leaks before watching the episode. This just cements the fact, that yes the Guardian is in the flesh now.

Having a connection to the Q would be a disservice, and honestly, be bad for the season overall

Who is to say, that the Sphere was not a guardian? It certainly seems to be at the right power level and knowledge scope.
Perhaps, it's the intel source for the guardian as we know it.
Then Discovery plucked that out of the timeline, leaving the guardian a little underpowered and crippled.
now that the sphere data at least is back in the universe, the Guardian is back to full power and it explains, how the sphere data knows it exact location.

I gotta disagree. Disco is always strongest when the show relies on old concepts and nostalgia. That’s what this whole season is all about, to see the future in context of the past we already know.

With all the space/time/universe jumps Discovery basically became an analogy machine, fueled by Trek canon and old ideas.

The writers acknowledged that the characters and the premise of Discovery will never be strong enough without heavily relying on the previous shows which actually delivered on story and character development.

You can defend the show all you want but you will only fool yourself if you think that Disco could ever follow an independent approach in terms of storytelling.
