They announced at the Disney Investors Presentation that Wonder Woman and WW1984 director Patty Jenkins will be directing a Rogue Squadron movie.
I loved first Wonder Woman, and WW1984 looks like it'll be at least as good, so this is pretty much shooting right to the top of my most anticipated movies.
Patty Jenkins tweeted out an announcement video where she explains her inspiration for the movie. Her late father was a fighter pilot, and she always wanted to make the greatest fighter pilot movie ever, and now she's getting her chance with Rogue Squadron.

Not a fan of the director, but I really want to see a Rogue Squadron movie. hopefully the directing and producing makes up for the directing and we end up getting a good movie.

Wonder where in the timeline this lands. Are we during OT? Post-ROTJ like Mandalorian setting or post last movie?

I was wondering about that too, there are a ton of possibilities there.

The when this film will take place is the largest question. If OT, this is Luke's squadron. If post-ROTJ, this is Wedge's squadron (before Jakku?)

Or will this tie into the possible return of Grand Admiral Thrawn to the screen.

I can't imagine a Rogue Squadron film taking place near the time of the Sequel Trilogy.

I can, though I'm certainly hoping for an OT setting instead.

This is from the press release on StarWars.com:
Sounds like it'll be set after the sequels.

In Kathleen Kennedy’s announcement, she said that Jenkins’ film will explore a new, previously unexplored era of “Star Wars” lore set in the future beyond “The Rise of Skywalker.”

So guess now it's 'how long' after The Rise of Skywalker are we talking. A little weird that the director showed the classic x-wing in the announcement she had though.

After the Sequel Trilogy? That is very unexpected.

Excited for this too. Liked WW allot and WW84 looks like it will be solid too.

Goes without saying I think this news confirms if it wasn't already the Rian Johnson movie series is kaput too. Crazy to think Disney had plans for a SW movie a year not long ago and now we will have up to a 4 year gap between them now. Clearly a huge reset going on with that franchise.

This is being widely reported, but it's not what she said. As you can see, she makes no mention of tROS. That's an assumption people (journos & vloggers included) are making based on the mention of "a future era of the galaxy".
It could mean exactly than, but then again, perhaps not. I'm sure they'll clarify before too long.

Personally, I could see them going that way. I mean it's tough to do Rogue Squadron without Wedge and Lawson is way too old to do a post RotJ era movie (and digital de-ageing him for the whole movies seems impractical.) So transplanting the idea of the old Rogue Squadron stories into the post tROS rebuilding period instead of the post RotJ clean-up period with Wedge in the role of the old veteran mentoring a new generation of pilots is totally doable.

On the other hand, they've been so coy about including Rogue Squadron in any of the new canon media (specifically in the post RotJ period) that it does feel like they were being ringfenced and saved for just such a project.

^ If they can recast Alec Guiness, Harrison Ford, whoever played Mon Mothma, and Billy Dee Williams with younger actors, they can sure as heck recast some guy even many longtime Star Wars can't recall the name of offhand, and who has all of, what two minutes of total screen time?

Ugh, I hope not. That whole era needs a good carbonite freezing... perhaps indefinitely.

This is different. Lawson actually played that character at that age (or thereabouts), and while he may be a minor side character as far as the movies go, in the tie-in media and to the fandom in general, he's up there with the likes of Boba Fett in terms of recognition and popularity. I'm not saying it's impossible (they already had someone else play a younger him on 'Rebels') just that it'd be weird. Indeed, precisely because the character is exactly this amount of obscure AND notable means getting some other actor to play him would feel rather pointless. The newer fans would be like "who's this guy and why should I care?" while the old fans would be like "...that's not Wedge."
