Absolutely. Season three's biggest drawback is they are playing it ultra safe.

It's the 32nd century, which could open wide new vistas in terms of both technological advancement affecting stories and new alien races. Instead it's like almost no time has passed at all and we're dealing with Orions, Andorians, Vulcans, and Trill. Because they want something comfy and familiar for fanboys after two divisive seasons.

Which is why the show is giving me a Voyager vibe now. The premise allows for wild new possibilities in storytelling, but they turn away from the possibilities and give us...regular Trek. Which is fine, but...

Yup exactly. After all the stories involving USS Relativity from Voyager and Daniels/ 'Temporal Cold War' plot from Enterprise, I was expecting lots of time travel and lots of new, exotic, and interesting aliens (akin to the Xindi, Species 8472, or even Linus' race).

Instead what we got is no time travel (because its banned by some gobledy gook regulations made up just before 'The Burn') and same old Trek aliens from TOS and TNG era. I'd rather see the Disco crew trying to stop the Xindi from building a new WMD superweapon rather than having them fighting off some Orion pirates like in this episode :shrug:

Why take the risk?

Because fighting Xindi is fun

Plus Starfleet could have had other Xindi as allies since they did serve as crew on the Enterprise J.

Getting back to criticism I hate the word "woke" I've been on the receiving end of that one and it's used as some kind of slur if you defend shows like Discovery or Picard in some circles. Suddenly ou are now "woke" and that is viewed as a bad thing.

yawn.

To be extremely brief: it’s really naive to think that anything, especially something destined for mass consumption, exist in a bubble.
More than ever today, when instead of physically asking people around the studio can just have people read opinions on the net.

And in fact *a lot* of the criticism of season 1 and 2 have been dealt with, one way of the other.

You lost me at “yawn”. Told me everything I need to know about your confidence in your position

sorry.

I say this not to antagonize (honestly)....but....

So DSC format and storyline takes risks and does something different, receives complaints. DSC adjusts by returning to more traditional Star Trek formula...and receives complaints.

Got it.

I'm one of those posters who comments on "writing" so I might draw some of your antagonism.

I have watched every episode/movie of anything named Star Trek, but I also don't expect that the powers that be are going to come on here and take any of our suggestions.

It's my opinion that they didn't actually take risks in the first two seasons of Discovery. They had a high caliber actor in Jason Isaacs as Lorca and then turned him into a moustache twirling villain from the mirror universe. Frankly, the only thing good that came out of that was the mirror Georgiou and that is because Michelle Yeoh is acting the hell out of her. The second season, the writers had this idea with the Red Angel and the sphere date, but then we ended up with another cardboard villain in control.

I had super high hopes for season three. I've been one of the people who have thought that Discovery should have been set in the far future to start, but that the 32nd century could allow the show to take some risks without being beholden to any canon they decided they wanted to follow. And there is a lot of good stuff so far. This season has really nailed a lot of the intimate character moments. I've liked Burnham a lot more this season than I did at any point in the first two. But it feels like the creative team are speeding through this season because they need to reach some kind of, what they would feel, conclusion for the season. The last two episodes frankly could have been broken up into four in my opinion.

But it's my opinion and I'm here to discuss it, not to bitch and whine because they aren't following the slow burn (no pun intended) I think would've been a better choice. I'm open to having my mind changed.

Sulu agrees, he fired Crewman Christian Slater for waking him.

Star Trek isn't about war, or so I've heard.

what can I say? I’m tired of seeing trite arguments that ignore the reality of writing anything for the public, especially for profit.
What's tiring as well is the idea that the writers can't be given credit for anything. They right larger stakes in the first couple of seaons and get knocked for it. They scale it down this season and it's too slow and mundane.

Honestly, finding planets in the Goldilocks Zone is easier than finding happy Trek fans it seems.

I think everything's not as it seems.

But the audience here isn't very receptive and likely to twist what I say to their advantage, so I'm not going to go further into it. You can't have nice things. But if anyone wants to know what I think might be going on, send me a PM.

Probably due to costs skyrocketing in recent years...Which is why I’m particularly looking forward to season 4: using virtual backgrounds like they do on mandalorian means they can show more varied environments without costs changing much.

It also means that the VFXs for mixed scenes has to be completed before mixing and the director will have a better idea of how the final scene will look.
The virtual backgrounds are due to the covid-19 situation; not due to budget restrictions.

Discovery is damned if it does and damned if it doesn't. If it does things differently its criticised for not being star trek. If it made does things conservatively it's not taking enough risks. Seriously, pick one.

People have a hard time realizing that they just plain old don’t like it.

It’s like I always say...it’s ok not to like it. It’s divisive. No question.

But all the gyrating people do trying to rationalize gets tiresome. It’s the writers. It’s the direction. It’s got too much action. Genes vision. Not enough action. Serialized sucks. Filler episodic outings suck. Not enough character development. Too much focus on Burnham. Too tied to canon and Trekkie lore. Not respective enough of canon. Too different from real Trek. Plays it too safe.

Nowhere in there is just a simple “I don’t like it because it’s not my thing. Sorry.” It’s ok to not like it. Nobody has to justify themselves. You’ll be forgiven, I assure you.

This....... They are in a no win situation. If they don't do risky things with story they get pilloried but if they take it slow and methodically, they also get criticized. I would rather they do take risks and give us stories we haven't seen before or tackle things in a different new way. I'm enjoying Discovery, all of Discovery.

It’s dreadfully naive to think there’s no harm done.

And, as anyone who knows anything about Business 101 would tell you: “ If you aren’t growing, you’re dying. “
then explain why people who didn't watch it before would choose to then watch hate videos about it and blindly believe them, and why they would instead watch the shows if it weren't for those hate videos?

If radical is too radical, and unchanged is too unchanged, perhaps middle ground is the key. There's a lot of space for creativity between extremes.

You’re grandstanding because Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman might just be reading looking for some advice from random chat board dwellers on how their $91M / season television series should be plotted.
Ah, so random hate videos have a dreadfully dreadful effect and will kill entire shows, but random forum comments will be overlooked.
In your words: "Got it."

Your very own "dreadfully naive" is much nicer, I assume. "not to antagonize (honestly)".
