Yeah, Discovery seems like it's been plagued by...poor coordination between the VFX team and the writer's room? Or just showrunners who don't give a shit and let VFX do whatever they want? Regardless, it's weird how many times the script has directly said something, and then the visuals go off and do something else. I realize this happens far more in TV than in film since directors are hired guns and EPs are typically jumped-up writers who aren't necessarily visual thinkers, but it's very notable with Discovery.
I still cringe thinking about Starbase 1 specifically called out in dialogue as being 100 AU from Earth (in the Sol System’s dim/dark scattered disk region with comets & dwarf planetoids), and VFX had it orbiting a sunny terrestrial planet that had Earth landmasses. It must’ve been originally written to be in orbit of Earth, and there was a too-late ADR change during the final sound mix on the episode that didn’t get communicated.

Probably due to costs skyrocketing in recent years...Which is why I’m particularly looking forward to season 4: using virtual backgrounds like they do on mandalorian means they can show more varied environments without costs changing much.

It also means that the VFXs for mixed scenes has to be completed before mixing and the director will have a better idea of how the final scene will look.

Yet in this episode the powerful pirate with a huge starship doesn’t even hint interest in the old little ship lost in space.
Priorities. Time enough to scuttle the Disco and take it's dilithium after their primary goal is reached. Did we really need Ossayra to cackle "And after we get the Andorian we're gonna take all your dilithium!!!!! BWAHAHAHA!!!!" ?

then why point out that discovery will be an irresistible target to pirates of all kinds if when those pirates appear they couldn’t care less?

Hell, we've known that ever since the "D7" debacle in the first season.

Apparently a writer dropped that name into whichever the hell episode it was, either without knowing or caring (or both) what the D7 class actually looked like.

Retconned away in season 2, with the appearance of D7s that actually look like what we've always known D7s look like (and the weird-ass version from season 1 now being of the "Sech class" instead).

really.

lunar landing conspiracy videos won't stop someone from watching apollo documentaries.
people screaming into their cameras how a new show deeply hurt them and killed everything they hold dear won't stop anyone who

and even if it were true: how exactly does it damage a franchise if people who didn't watch it before still don't watch it?

It’s dreadfully naive to think there’s no harm done.

And, as anyone who knows anything about Business 101 would tell you: “ If you aren’t growing, you’re dying. “

And then it would be maligned for poor dialogue with no subtext.

Complaints about DSC using too much exposition. Then, complaints about DSC being too vague.

Got it.
Previous page. And several times before.

I was speaking specifically to the exchange between @Jadeb and myself. I would never have said that to him. Others...yep, I’d admittedly be tempted.

On the other hand, people don’t want to wait decades for something and then don’t like it. And this is one of the reasons there is such a strong reaction to new Trek and the new Star Wars.

There’s a significant difference though. The production exists. So, yes...while it sucks that you don’t like it, that’s on you. It exists as is. So you can choose to “fight the fight” and grate against what is...or you can chose to look the other way in peace.

For those who actually like it, though, the negativity risks elimination / destruction of what already is and has been invested in and is being actively enjoyed.

In one instance, people are disappointed that they can’t have what they want. In another, people are threatened by a having what they actively like altered or taken away. And it’s already happened. DSC’s format and setting change in S3 is a direct result of “fan influence...” and there will never be any convincing me otherwise.

Those stakes are very very different if you ask me.

Absolutely. Season three's biggest drawback is they are playing it ultra safe.

It's the 32nd century, which could open wide new vistas in terms of both technological advancement affecting stories and new alien races. Instead it's like almost no time has passed at all and we're dealing with Orions, Andorians, Vulcans, and Trill. Because they want something comfy and familiar for fanboys after two divisive seasons.

Which is why the show is giving me a Voyager vibe now. The premise allows for wild new possibilities in storytelling, but they turn away from the possibilities and give us...regular Trek. Which is fine, but...

What did people expect exactly? Playing it safe is exactly what would happen with fan reaction like with season 1 and 2.

or you can point out what you don’t like and maybe someone will be listening...Or you believe that the many changes in season 2 happened in a bubble?

I say this not to antagonize (honestly)....but....

So DSC format and storyline takes risks and does something different, receives complaints. DSC adjusts by returning to more traditional Star Trek formula...and receives complaints.

Got it.

Oh believe me, I know that’s allways the ultimate fantasy of the poster who complains. You’re not really arguing with other fans, cuz they aren’t going to change their minds. You’re grandstanding because Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman might just be reading looking for some advice from random chat board dwellers on how their $91M / season television series should be plotted.

yawn.

To be extremely brief: it’s really naive to think that anything, especially something destined for mass consumption, exist in a bubble.
More than ever today, when instead of physically asking people around the studio can just have people read opinions on the net.

And in fact *a lot* of the criticism of season 1 and 2 have been dealt with, one way of the other.
