I haven't read the Vong novels, but as it was explained to me, 40-ish years before the Battle of Yavin, Palpatine was looking through a telescope, and saw a few thousand planet sized ships crossing the intergalactic void, and shat his pants.

An invading force that was was going to kill or enslave every one he knew, as they repurposed the "Old" republic to service their needs... Unless... Someone invented a mobile super turbo laser to defend the frontier from barbarians who are probably also cannibals.

The Emperor is the good guy.

He built the Empire to fight the Vong.

The old republic didn't even have an army.

What if Obi-Wan didn't turn into a cosmic fart, but he went straight into Vader and assumed his life. If every thing after that sword fight on the death star was Obi-Wan pretending to be Vader and possibly pretending to be Lukes father, in a long con to finish the Emperor and make sure that he dies for real at the end of the story?
