Plot: An epic new Star Trek saga by New York Times bestselling author Greg Cox set during the original five-year mission!

The planet Vok is holding its first free elections after years of oppressive military rule. Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise have been dispatched by Starfleet to serve as impartial observers, but remaining neutral proves a challenge, as Kirk confronts a tangled web of scandal, conspiracy, and assassination plots—with the stability of an entire sector at stake.

To make matters worse, Dr. Leonard McCoy has vanished while on a mission of mercy to Braco, a nearby planet only a system away. With Kirk unable to abandon his vital mission on Vok to hunt for his friend, it’s up to First Officer Spock and Christine Chapel to lead a team in search of the missing doctor, even if it means risking whatever fate befell McCoy.

Unknown to his friends and crewmates, however, McCoy has been spirited away to another world, Ozalor, where he’s expected to find a cure for a mysterious ailment plaguing a member of the planet’s ruling family. Torn between his Hippocratic oath and his desire to escape, McCoy finds himself at the center of deadly palace intrigues—and a struggle for power that may ultimately consume all three worlds!

Review: I just got this book in the mail. The cover looks good in person.

Hmm. Next in line after I finish the second and final book of Don Quixote.
    Unusual cover art.

Mr. Cox has been a favorite of mine for years, just as Mr. Bennett has been. With the added bonus that he isn't so inclined to split hairs (or to split them someplace other than where I would split them).:nyah:

There isn't a Memory Beta page for it, yet is there?

Either way, I've preordered and I'm intrigued. We get to see three new worlds! I wonder if they are at different developmental levels. Vok sounds like it could be 2016-20 Earth, the third one like the stage for a medieval royal courtyard drama.

The three world concept reminds me of Mission To Horatius.

Do you see that as good, bad, or just an observation?

I've taken a look at A Contest of Principles using the Amazon and Google Books previews. It feels more TOSy than most modern TOS novels in the sense that the aliens look identical to humans and Sulu and Uhura's first names are never mentioned. I'm not sure if that was what the author was going for. On the other hand, the main plot thread involving a highly polarized election makes the book feel very contemporary. I also found a reference to the Ba'ul. Several one-episode characters including Zahra, Mears and Jana Haines make appearances, which is always a good thing in my opinion.

STAR TREK has always been strangely lacking in muckraking reporters . . . .
