Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

I just got to the latest episode of Kamen Rider saber oh, I've been putting it off because honestly it's kind of mediocre as a show, and I just saw the mini gaim cameos. those two seconds seeing Kamen Rider Bravo is probably the best part of the show so far.

Besides that, it was a tolerable episode. I still like the main Rider, but I loathe his manager or whoever she's supposed to be, she's quite possibly the worst supporting character in the franchise.

Kamen Rider Saber episode 9

Well. That was certainly....something

I did like the beginning where we got to see Touma, Rintarou and Kento fight the grunts before they henshined and then we skip over the henshin to go right into their respective belt phrases

Slash was noisy but kind of expected. Apparently when he uses Bremen, he basically turns into Ryutaros from Kamen Rider Den-O

I still haven't found out why Daishinji can't look at Touma.

You can tell from the energy and camera angles in this episode that it was directed by Sakamoto.

I wasn't too fond of downplaying Slash's debut to give Saber his all red three book form debut alongside it

This weekend's upcoming episode is Kento's all yellow three book form debut btw

Calibur will also be getting an upgraded form. Aside from that that pretty much covers the next month and half of any new forms or gear based on the released magazine scans

It was interesting to see the Journey to the west and Ugly duckling book

When Calibur was talking about consequences of Sophia leaving the Logo's base it reminded me of the Dr. Strange movie

It was okay. Mainly about introducing the new Rider and the new mystery woman, and setting up mystery arcs, so it was more about plot and action than character development. Kind of cluttered, but then, the whole season has been so far.

His Rider name is Slash? It's so annoying that they don't actually say the Rider names in the henshin sequences. Sophia addresses the swordsmen by their Rider names, but otherwise it's really unclear who's who.

I'm pretty sure he's autistic. He doesn't like eye contact, he's more comfortable with things than people, he's extremely focused and meticulous in his work. It's nice that Toei sometimes tries to be inclusive of non-neurotypical heroes, like Zyuoh TheWorld, who was bipolar.

Interesting that they go from the iconic English legend, King Arthur, to the iconic Chinese legend, Journey to the West. I couldn't really tell what there was about the Journey book that was connected to the story, aside from the shoulder decoration of that priest's staff kind of thing with the bells on the hoop.

I didn't get what the Ugly Duckling story had to do with the multiple Megiddo fighting together. Unless they represented the whole duck family in the story, or something. I don't really remember the story that well.

I didn't know that ShinkenRed( Tori Matsuzaka) was in the live action movie adaptation of the classic anime "Gatchaman"

Apparently he's gotten to be a big star. He's so big that its rumored he's been advised not to consider doing any super sentai related specials/return movies/guest appearances

For an actor to do that would be seen as lowly/beneath their status considered by their agency

I'm annoyed at myself that I can still understand so little Japanese without subtitles. I mean, I took four semesters of it back in college 30-odd years ago, I've been watching Japanese TV and movies almost daily for the past year or two now, so I really should have absorbed more of the vocabulary by this point. But then, part of the reason I stopped taking Japanese in college was because I just wasn't good enough at remembering foreign grammar and vocabulary. I'm good with pronunciation, but not the rest. (I had the same issue with Spanish in high school, but I took it twice as long and retain more.)

Still, I was watching a Kamen Rider X episode the other day and there was a new, unsubtitled insert song, and I was able to follow the rough meaning of almost its entire first verse. So I am picking up a certain amount.

I've spent the better part of a dozen+ years, and I can only understand basic every day conversational Japanese, but specialized vocabulary for certain fields are hard for me to remember until it hits my head enough times. So don't be disheartened, as fellow non-Japanese native English language speaker, it took me a while since I started intaking Japanese media since 19 y/o until now and I can only understand a small fraction of the language.

I hope he doesn't follow that advice and comes back when he wants to.

I've often thought that if I could have one superpower, I'd probably pick the ability to understand any spoken or written language.

I hope he doesn't follow that advice and comes back when he wants to.

There have been a few toku actors who went on to greater fame but did eventually come back to the franchise for guest appearances, like the star of Kamen Rider Den-O, for one.

I just hope more come back and don't become "Stuck Up" and think Tokusatsu is "Beath Them" now that they're famous.

We finally got Kamen Rider Saber #10. I find myself wishing the henshins and action sequences weren't quite so over-the-top and cluttered and noisy, because it does distract from the character stories. This one was mainly about Kento dealing with guilt that Calibur is his traitorous father, and the ultimate revelation that the current Calibur isn't his father, but another key character instead. I'm a bit disappointed by that, since I like the actor who plays Kento's father; as I've mentioned, I liked him in Kamen Rider 555 and Shinkenger, and was looking forward to seeing more of him here. Hopefully he'll still show up.

We also find out that the gorgeous mystery woman who showed up at the end last week is from the "Southern Base" (which the Japanese actors pronounce "Sow-zahn," and now that I think about it, it's pretty weird that we don't pronounce "South" and "Southern" with the same initial vowel, so I can't blame them for missing that), and apparently they have their own team of swordsmen operating in parallel with the Northern Base pseudo-sentai that we've been following. I hope that means she's a Rider herself. The show could do with more of a female presence.

The annoying narrator Tassel had moments in his intro and outro scenes where the background blacked out and he suddenly switched from his playful children's-storyteller persona to something more serious and dark. And at the end, he said it was time for him to go meet someone. I've been suspecting that he'd eventually turn out to have an actual connection to the narrative, and possibly would have a darker side hidden beneath the frivolous narrator facade, like DJ Sagara in Gaim. This would seem to support that suspicion.

Incidentally, it occurred to me recently that the reason the Wonder Ride Books use those strange distorted titles like "King of Arthur" and "Hanselnuts to Gretel" is probably so their titles will be unique and trademarkable.

Woah, Handa Kento was in Saber? I might need to take a look, then.

Lord, I want more 555 stuff. Give us a full-on sequel film, Toei!

No, I'm referring to Mitsuru Karahashi, who was Naoya in 555 and Fuwa in Shinkenger (the counterpart of Ricardo Medina Jr.'s Power Rangers Samurai character, Deker), and also appeared in Ghost as Miyamoto Musashi.

Kiramager episode 30

The MotW was pretty creepy this episode, and Sena was taken out of the action so early that she was sidelined for a lot of it.

I love how they subverted expectations of the commander/hakataminami being the newest hero.

Always fun to see Yodonna being creepy

Kiramager episode 31

Japanese Toy story!

Sentai's greatest enemy. A child

Remember. In this dangerous pandemic make sure to thoroughly clean toys you find

I liked the sound effects when the kid loomed over the mini mecha.

The kid even knew how to transform the toys

Takamichi's song was appropriately showa esque

Yeah, I didn't like it that both female Kiramagers were sidelined for most of the episode. Though it was funny that Sena was so determined to at least be frozen in a cute pose.

I love how they subverted expectations of the commander/hakataminami being the newest hero.

Although if they'd really had him become a Kiramager, it would've been a surprise. The fact that they talked about it in advance was a dead giveaway that it wouldn't actually happen.

Is he really a commander? He's more of a support guy, as they said here. More their science guy and inventor than the one giving them orders.

Kiramager episode 31

Japanese Toy story!

This was a heck of a budget-saver. Half the episode is a kid in his apartment playing with toys. It was also pretty much an extended commercial for the toys, even more so than usual.

What I couldn't buy was that the kid didn't recognize Kirameijin and Gigant Driller. I mean, these are gigantic robots that fight in the center of town on a weekly basis. Surely people have noticed that they exist. And it used to be that kids always knew who the heroes were, even when adults didn't. Or was that more of a Showa thing?

I think this is at least the second time that we've seen the Jamenju appear with the Jamenshi being destroyed offscreen before the episode. The first time, at least they mentioned what the Jamenshi was (some kind of Neanderthal thing). This time, we have no idea, except that it seemed to be smartphone- or tablet-based.

The kid even knew how to transform the toys

Yeah, he figured it out a bit too easily. It amused me, though, when Shovellow said "My change is easy." He just sort of plugs right into the shoulder.

Looks like one iconic sentai filming location will be dismantled after the Olympics

https://twitter.com/WeeabooShogun/status/1326285573963849728

Sad tokusatsu news today Harumi Terminal to officially be dismantled following the Olympics. Not only was this Exceedraft HQ, it also hosted those checkered floors and interesting solar lights where fights frequently took place.

Yeah, there have been many memorable henshin/roll call scenes on those steps. I think I also remember some set pieces built around those inverted-pyramid sculptures in the background.
