I’m sure when Cushman gets to the movies, we’ll get the real story…
Oh God, I couldn’t even type that with a straight face.
Yeah, Kirk would have to put Sybok into some elaborate trap that Sybok can escape from. The villains even did that to Connery in Indiana Jones (tying him in a chair next to Indy instead of just killing them).Luckinbill was fine, and unknown to me. Connery would have really taken me out of the film. I'd keep waiting for an oil slick or for him to be tied to a table with a laser slowly inching towards his ear tips or something.
As Henry Jones is one of my very favorite Sean Connery performances and STV wouldn't have been that great even with Connery's talents, I think it worked out for the best. There's no way I would ever trade Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade for a Star Trek V with Connery.
I read somewhere that Shatner turned down ILM because they offered him their B (or some other letter) team instead of A team, not knowing that ILM just named their teams by letter back then and that the letter didn't represent the team's capability or lack of.The hiring of Connery would have probably reduced the budget for the FX even more. Ugh.
It was their 'D' team. Haven't heard that last bit before before always assumed it was to do with the quality (as of Ralph Winters comments about the tests they gave the FX studios for the ending saying ILMs was silly and they would've had their D team as they were all booked up with Indy, Ghostbusters 2, BTTF2 and Abyss). But if Shatner could've had proper ILM all along instead of Bran Flakes Ferren be quite funny (and sad) if true.I read somewhere that Shatner turned down ILM because they offered him their B (or some other letter) team instead of A team, not knowing that ILM just named their teams by letter back then and that the letter didn't represent the team's capability or lack of.
yeah , he was in Zardoz and Outland and Highlander. I don't think he was opposed to nerdy movieswell there was also the potential stigma of appearing in 'star trek' even though TVH was a huge break out hit like a Crocodile Dundee almost (so the next movie was something of a sure thing if ever there was), Trek still had that 'for nerds' thing (overseas anyway) .. so had Indy not been an option maybe it wouldve depended on if Connery was abit of a fan as his people/agent etc might be saying 'oof! you dont wanna do star trek!' to which hed mightve said 'yesh i do im a huge shtar trek fan and cant wait to get on the Enterprisesh shet with Kirk & Shpock!'
additional problems coulve been the script wasnt great (even for star trek) and playing Spocks bro mightve been abit 'eh? they want me to wear the earsh?' (then again as previously mentioned Connery went on to do Highlander 2 so quality obviously wasnt such a big deal if the money was right!)
True, and reading any making of books like Shatners daughters book or The Making of the Trek Films, TFF was hardly plain sailing.. I could imagine the dosnt suffer fools gladly Connery becoming enraged on location when various stuff wasn't working right (and maybe the script not being up to scratch) ..imagine the more diplomatic Nimoy having to step in to diffuse any arguing between Shatner and Connery with Spock like cadence! .. Luckinbill on the other hand mustve just felt 'lucky' to be thereMaybe it was for the best, we don't actually know if Shatner and Connery would have gotten along. I heard Connery got into some pretty vicious rows with the Bond people back in the day. And his last film, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, was infamous for the fights Connery had with the director, Stephen Norrington.
Now it's possible Norrington and the Bond people were entirely at fault and Connery had every legitimate reason to be angry at them, although I remember Connery was still trashing Norrington during marketing of League, saying he should be institutionalized or something, which isn't really professional (if Connery felt Norrington had done something illegal, why doesn't he take it up with the proper channels--although Ray Fisher from Justice League is currently trying to get his grievances with Joss Whedon handled through those channels now and it seems a long process so perhaps Connery didn't want to bother).
But it's a possibility when you bring 2 infamously strong willed and often uncompromising figures like Shatner and Connery together, things can either go brilliantly or very, very wrong.
I'm not even sure Nimoy was feeling diplomatic at the time... (then again maybe Connery was a closest trekkie and been just happy to be in Trek and unable to believe he was sharing scenes with the actual Kirk & Spock!)
It strikes me as fortunate that they got Michelle Yeoh, who is very much an A-list star, to appear for Discovery.Just thinking of all the huge A list stars that were preliminary attached or considered for Trek films.. Eddie Murphy (TVH), Sean Connery, Brando (Soran), Hanks (FC), Arnie (Insurrection), Jude Law (Shinzon), Russel Crowe/Tom Cruise (Nero/Pike ST09), Benicio Del Toro (Khan)

Hadn’t heard that.
Luckinbill seems to have had a mostly good time with the film and said he was surprised by the poor reception.

Are you thinking Western centric or globally? The world doesn't revolve around America. China is the largest country by population. And directors like Zhang Yimou are bigger and more respected than, say, JJ Abrams (who's a fine guy but he himself would say he's done a lot of remakes/sequels than his own movie body of work).Nothing against Michelle Yeoh, but on the same level with Brando, Connery and Hanks or Arnie? Not so sure about it...
