I'd watch a George Takei Sulu series.
Wasn't one rumored around 1994, but then VOY turned up and half the fans were annoyed? (and season 1 of VOY, at the time, had me longing for a Sulu show instead... I warmed up to VOY...)
I used to feel that way, too, back in the early-to-mid 90s when Takei was lobbying for a Captain Sulu show. Then he did that Voyager 2-parter and it was pretty obvious that George Takei doesn't have the acting chops to carry a series.
With a supporting cast as ensemble, does it matter as much?
I also felt Takei was half-hearted in doing that episode since most of it was just repeating his bits of STVI's script as well as shoehorning in Tuvok into an episode he was never in to upstage him with. (That said, it was cool to see the
Excelsior cast reunite, even if it was mostly as an instant-replay with a couple extra scenes.) Never mind that Janeway also does a "number one" on TOS, in an episode ostensibly paying homage and reverence to Trek's then 30th anniversary. By contrast, DS9's
Tribble-ations celebration episode felt like a genuine love letter, which did not upend anything or created any paradox that I recall... That said, Flashback is an interesting attempt for what what it's trying
to do, but it doesn't quite work.
I don't need them to tie the universes together - but I really like Cho as Sulu, and would love to see him in a Captain Sulu show.
Agreed, there's no reason to tie anything together at all...
Also, it's way too easy to imagine Kelley and Takei doing the same scene. That clip will hopefully win people over as there is some potential for a Cho/Sulu series... but Takei and Kelley still would have done that style of scene better if they had gotten the chance in the 1980s/90s... ()the Kelvin movies were often just nostalgiabait and "what ifs" based on what everyone knew as superficial traits for the characters.) Takei's Sulu still had far more character development in his era of Trek than the parallel timeline blank slate edition Cho was trying to make his own. With a proper chance, Cho could easily get actual character development, and the approach that scene took with all involved was good. Will such a show be made? Unlikely. But I'd watch to see where they might go with it.
