Question three, where did they get those repair shuttles from when they used up all their small craft less then 24 hours ago fighting control?

 

Do sensors work in subspace? And what about subspace communications? It should not be affected by the Burn since it is not related to dilithium. Starfleet should still be able to communicate via subspace.

Yea... At this point you really have to wonder what the Writers were smoking here...

 

If the subspace communication relays all exploded during the Burn because they had dilithium for some reason, there wouldn't be subspace communication and no way to travel to the relay locations to rebuild them.

 

Which makes me wonder if this goes beyond just the Burn destroying dilithium and starships. If subspace communications and sensors are affected then this could be something in the space-time continuum that rippled across the galaxy and disrupted not only a physical element but electronic communications and transmissions. The Temporal Wars scoring one last strike to harm one of the combatants?

This is my current interpretation is that the Burn wasn't just dilithium exploding but disrupting the fabric of subspace making communications, warp drive and frequent travel more hazardous, at least for a time.

 

Sisko is timeless now, being with the Prophets and all, and his return has been rumored... Might he be enticed to help rebuild the Federation?

 

Overall, I thought it was a better outing that the first two episodes. 8/10. Would be higher, but the first 15-20 minutes grated on me enough that I almost wanted to turn it off. A bunch of sappy reunion stuff that would have had a lot more oomph to it if there had been ANY CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT WHATSOEVER in previous seasons. Also, the payoff doesn't make any sense for the crew of the Disco, as from their perspective she was hardly gone more than a day. And yet everyone is all weepy at the sight of Michael Burnham like they haven't seen her in ages. I am sure they are happy she made it through the wormhold alive, but it fell pretty flat and that whole aspect of the episode was a slog for me.

But after all the weepy hugs, it got a lot more interesting, and it took a couple turns I wasn't expecting. Now the search for whatever may or may not be left of starfleet is on. It's a better and more interesting story arc than "OMG the fate of ALL SENTIENT LIFE EVER HINGES ON BURNHAM AND A MAGIC ANGEL SUIT!" It will hopefully allow for a larger season long (or longer?) serial arc, with relatively episodic shows where they go about the galaxy picking up hints as to what happened to starfleet, while having different adventures each week. That has real potential for some good world-building. Crossing my fingers. There is still a lot of fast-paced action, but the writers seem to be doing a somewhat better job this season with pacing balance, and characterization seems somewhat better. It's early, but I hope the trend continues.

Nitpick: At the beginning, it is stated that dilithium became rare before the burn? And Starfleet was already in decline because they couldn't figure out any alternative propulsion methods? That kind of threw me for a loop. The Romulans developed their dilithium-less warp drive hundreds of years previously, and starfleet engineers still can't reverse engineer any of that tech? They never once got their hands on a functional warbird and figured out exactly how it works? I thought the Ferengi also did not use dilithium in their drives? I could be wrong about that one, but if that is true then no doubt their schematics are for sale.

 

I would like to think he returned in like 6 months after DS9 to be with Jake, his wife, and new kid. But I suppose nothing's stopping him from fixing the Burn first and then going back in time for that.

Apparently, the new Starfleet Academy show is set on New Earth. Could it be the place where the Federation headquarters are now?

I don't think the repair crafts would've been much help fighting Control. It was probably a smart plan to hold them in reserve for later repairs.

There's nothing saying the Romulan drive doesn't use dilithium in some way, they even mine it on Remus.

 

Starfleet Academy. Was it preserved as a museum since Starfleet is no more?
