Daniels: "On my Earth, people run naked with animals. As per the edict of the Great Bird."
Tucker: "Runnin' naked with animals? The Great Bird? I see they have better moonshine in the future. That's for sure."
Daniels: "It's not your Earth."
Tucker: "Well, I'll say. Next thing you know, you'll be telling me all the Admirals in Starfleet will go crazy."

That was a hell of an opening. Suru really does have a way with speeches.

By the way I am loving this new confident Burnham. The Sisko Effect is alive and well. ;)

Cake is eternal XD
One aye, we're not pirates XD
Was their 'ship too old to be in use' vs 'why replace what is not broken' discussion a reference to fan debates? XD
It's odd that EDF doesn't recognize the uniforms and badges as very old.
Adira seems very interesting!

I really liked that episode. It didn't surprise me like If Memory Serves, but it had some incredible universe building and we got some diplomacy back in Star Trek. One of my favorite things about TNG was talk first, shoot as last resort (Picard and Tomalak) and we got that here with Ndoye and Wen and the Discovery crew.

I think one thing I am having a bit of an issue with (And it's minor) is the feeling like they've only gone 50 years into the future and not 930. The reason I say that is because the last shot on Earth doesn't really look all that different from the 24th century. You would think in 930 years you wouldn't really need the Golden Gate Bridge anymore, or that tree they were all standing near would be long dead? I know it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but the last scene made me go "wha?"

Other than that, I really enjoyed this one and it did feel like a relaunch of the show to an extent. I really liked the Adira character and her conversation with Paul was nice. They've got a good plotline going so far.

I'll give this episode a 9.

I still don't get a promo for the next episode. :(

Ok the ending of this episode was just tonally off.

First of all, what's the rush for Discovery to find the cause of the Burn? The Federation's been gone for a century, waiting a few more weeks or even months won't hurt.

Also, wouldn't Discovery's arrival be a big deal for Earth? Discovery's crew would be paraded through the press as heroes, Earth scientists would be eager to learn about the lost Spore Drive and bring a whole expedition team onto Discovery to help undo the Burn (you know, experts who may have actually witnessed the Burn firsthand or even secondhand--regardless far more qualified to undo the Burn than 1,000 year old people who are out of date), Earth would be eager to duplicate the Spore Drive, Earth would provide Discovery with the latest 32nd century tech like portable transporters to help them, etc.

Instead, Earth just acts like it's no big deal that a ship with a much needed alternative propulsion drive shows up, they just leave a 16 year old as their only representation on said ship, and send them on their way. What?

I don't have an issue with the tree or the bridge. In the real world, we have hundreds of years old trees and bridges, which are still being used, around.

The Burn is feeling more like a directed attack against Federation space with collateral damage taking place in areas bordering that space. And, after that attack, the Federation abandoned its capital world for places unknown.

The more this drags on, the more questions are raised. I really hope the answers are worth the wait, or this could be another disappointing season for me.

Connection to something greater than ourselves, "don't say anything annoyingly inspirational, that makes me nuts.", Burnham in a Trill pool with her eyes turning white, Linus giving Georgiou popcorn, a mysterious image in an eye
and stuff from the trailers

They apparently couldn't scan well enough to figure out anything about the spore drive

I was thinking about that too, but remember they did have to scrap Discovery from the records. in 930 years, Earth didn't know what Discovery was, so they see a ship full of dilithium and it survived the Burn. I would be suspicious as well.

Got a huge "The 37s" vibe at the end. I wish we saw more of the new Earth and learned how things are different now. (although we still don't exactly know what Earth is like and how Federation society worked.)

They could have at the very least given Discovery some upgrades.
It looks like weapons technology didn't exactly exponentially grow, but they pack more of a punch.

Some trees can live for thousands of years, and who knows how far arborical science has come. But, yeah, what we saw of Earth was pretty familiar. As a story beat connecting the crew back to Earth, I was OK with it.

Not the most groundbreaking episode, but efficient — it advanced the main arc while doing some nice character work and making room for an episodic storyline. I liked Burnham’s scenes with Book, Tilly and Saru; Stamets was in good form; and the raider costume was cool. The admiral twist was interesting.

I also really liked how they handled the question of the captaincy. Poignant without being overwrought. That’s how I felt about the episode in general, and, considering how much the show loves big emotions, I appreciated the subtlety.
