Battlestar Galactica getting rebooted (again) for NBS's streaming service

So far we're on writer #2 and director #1?
That’s if you don’t count the myriad failed attempts by Bryan Singer. There were at least 4 of those before and after RDM’s show. GAL also tried to do a Pegasus feature film, back when he owned exclusive rights to them prior to his death. And of course there was the Richard Hatch attempt.

So, many! :)

So does a movie mean a tv show is not happening? I would rather have a tv show and also one done by the guy who did Mr Robot.

Jason

It was, initially. As I understand the course of events, after GAL died, his estate settled with Universal, which finally acquired his long-sought exclusive ownership to feature film rights (how he got them in the first place was honestly quite impressive). Up til that point, Universal only owned the TV series rights. This new proposed effort (in its recent incarnations since Larson’s death) has intended to do a feature film instead. Likely to test the market waters to see if a subsequent series is even still feasible.

There is no known series effort going on right now (unless you’ve seen something from a reputable source out there to indicate otherwise). Feature film only, at present.

Yes, really. The last line of the first article specifically says, “It is believed that the new Battlestar Galactica movie, which is being produced by Bluegrass Films, will again reboot the franchise.” (emphasis mine). This article is a couple of years old and probably should be discounted in this context.

However, the first line of the second article (dated only 2 days ago) specifically says, “Dylan Clark is also producing the long-gestating feature adaptation of the cult favorite TV series.” (emphasis mine), rekindling the movie effort.

If anything, this might imply that a series might be undertaken only after a feature film is done. And that’s total conjecture on my part, in a wild attempt to find some seriously deep subtext laying between the lines. Nothing explicitly mentioned about parallel development of a feature and a series, as you suggest.

Taking into account the sordid history of multiple attempts at another post-RDM reboot over the years, July is ancient history. The second cited article is the latest on record, pretty much negating all that came before (as previous articles have also done).

Please don’t misunderstand - I would absolutely LOVE to see a new movie AND series. I just don’t see that happening right now, largely because I don’t think most people in Hollywood quite know how to handle the property (as has been evidenced by many of the cited historical attempts), but also the whole COVID thing tends to assist placing all well-made plans in the flaming dumpster of production hell.

Here we go:
https://variety.com/2020/film/news/...vie-simon-kinberg-writer-producer-1234813660/

From that article:
The feature film version of “BSG” is not connected to plans for a new “Battlestar Galactica” TV series currently in development for NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock by executive producer Sam Esmail (“Mr. Robot”).
(emphasis mine)

We're dealing with two completely separate BSG projects - a feature film and a television series - being developed simultaneously but independently.

Interesting... it looks like it has pieces from the second article with extra stuff added in. Well, I stand corrected! Thank you for posting that. As always, I look at all this with a healthy dose of hopeful skepticism, but it’s nice to at least see that people are still trying and may make it happen someday. Thank you for finding that.

I think that it might be awfully confusing to have one premise but with two different continuities out concurrently.

I mean Trek has sort of done something like that with the Prime and Kelvin timelines, but at least the realities are interrelated and there's some time lag between the movies and the shows. It also helps that for the most part we're talking about a different set of characters.

I can't really see both happening at the same time, I'm expecting one of these to be put on hold at some point. I just don't see the franchise being popular enough to sustain both.
I have admit, I'm kind of shocked that Universal seems to be so determined to make more BSG, I never really got the impression either of the series were that popular. I know RDM series was a huge critical success, but I thought it's ratings were never very high. I didn't think the original was all that popular, I know if got BSG1980, but it only lasted 10 episodes, and is pretty much a considered a joke these days.

. I didn't think the original was all that popular,

I think it was popular but not popular enough to justify it's production costs and G1980 was last ditch effort by the network to make some money on the property but not actually putting much in.

Well I was a fan of the first one fan of rdms version until I got to preachy that Eventually did finish it I look forward to another person's rendition of it I think it has a good premise and make a great show the premise would do quite well for a Trilogy the movies as well.

The two projects are being developed simultaneously; that does not mean that they will be released simultaneously.
You're probably right and if one gets the go-ahead the other will be shelved. But I could see a situation where it turns out to be a game of chicken between competing projects with neither studio wanting to back off after they've invested all the money and effort.

Either one will happen and the other one won't, or neither will happen. Both won't happen, at least not in such close proximity to one another, unless we get a Dune (Villeneuve film)/Dune: The Sisterhood (HBO Max series) situation where they're connected.
