Honestly, I think there is plenty of room for a lot of different types of fiction, and more parody would be welcomed.

I'm grading most of LDS on a curve, mainly because of its very broad humor, even so most of it is pretty underwhelming.

I've never seen any Starfleet officer in the main characters actually be in bloodlust, murderous rage without outside influence. Lorca was possibly the most vicious ever, but he of course, was from the MU.

RAMA

Once more, with feeling: it was on the holodeck. It wasn't real, any more than Paris and Kim were in a murderous rage when they killed things in Captain Proton or Picard was when he killed playing out Dixon Hill novels, Worf chopping up his holo-opponents or the Voyager crew in general when they were playing through Insurrection Alpha. Or if we're going to equate rage committing holo-killings, let's be consistent about it and admit that we've seen it before plenty of times.

Examples of Star Trek characters exhibiting murderous rage or murderous tendencies in actual life, under no outside influences (TNG edition):

• Data in "The Most Toys" starts to shoot a defenseless Kivas Fajo because Kivas had killed his own protoge, only to be spared from being a killer by being beamed up at the right time.
• Picard in First Contact enjoyed killing the Borg on the holodeck; it was clearly about more than self-defense.
• Riker phasered a buttload of Riker and Pulaski clones in "Up the Long Ladder"
• Someone already mentioned Worf and "Reunion," but really when had he not had bloodlust? That was kind of his thing as a Klingon, longing for battle.

There are probably other examples that don't come to mind, and ones where you can justify the killing (like phasering the mama alien in Conspiracy who only sought "peaceful co-existence." And there are certainly examples one could cite in the other shows -- Trip would definitely had been happy to slaughter all the Xindi in retaliation for their blowing up Florida, for example. But the point is even the best trained, well seasoned officers aboard the pride of the fleet slipped from the perfection from time to time. It's not unreasonable that less seasoned officers would still have to deal with rage and other psychological issues too.

To me, the only problematic part of the whole affair is that Boimler had taken seven years of people's personal logs to create the base simulation and make it more realistic. As Rutherford touches on, those are supposed to be private and invading someone's privacy is not cool. But I don't harsh on Geordi for doing something similar in creating holo-Leah Brahms in Booby Trap (though he used only publicly available sources, it's still kinda creepy).

That was the worst part about the episode and I don’t really care if Boimler never makes it back from Titan; he was always the least interesting person on the ship.

The TNG episode with Geordi and Brahms sqwicked me out and it affects my opinion of the character to this day in spite of the writers glossing it over.

Since "Lower Decks" is a parody, I cut its characters a certain amount of slack. They are who they are because it's funny.

But Geordi... yeah, that was disturbing. I accept his motivation for creating Holo-Leah. She probably would have as well. He should have simply deleted the program as soon as he was done with it.

You may not like Major Grin. I don't know anything about Major Grin and don't care. But I thought the video did a nice job of splicing the scenes from Lower Decks with the scenes from Trek movies that LD was spoofing.
