If the begining of The Vulcan Hello had been the templet for the series, Georgiou as captain, Burnham as first, USS Shenzhou as the series hero ship, then (imho) it would have been a good pilot.

I think Voyager is great Star Trek, even if it doesn't always live up to its potential. That's controversial enough from what I've seen on the internet. If so, this one'll blow your mind. Kathryn Janeway is my favorite Star Trek captain/commanding officer.
I do admit that the last episode of Voyager was a big fumble, though. I think the above idea about having the show end without them getting home but with their adventures being discovered later would have been much more solid storytelling. Perhaps Voyager could have been damaged beyond repair, forcing them to settle on an M Class planet. We then jump forward to find a Starfleet vessel from the not too distant future picking up a signal and finding their descendants on that world, somewhere on the outskirts of the Beta Quadrant, the only remaining member of the original crew the Doctor. Their descendants are curious about Earth, of course, but are also happy where they are, having grown up there.
I agree. I very much dislike Discovery as a whole. But I think if the series had been about Captain Georgiou and U.S.S. Shenzhou, it would have been a much stronger series. I think she is a far more interesting character, and Michelle Yeoh is a far more engaging actress.

The Vulcan Hello would have worked better as a season finale not a series premiere.
I've only skimmed a few entries in this thread. (Massively long amount of posts.) I've seen some good stuff on here.
I'm going to add my own. And if you've seen me post before, you'll know I mean this.
TNG's "Masks" and DS9's "MOVE ALONG HOME" are actually very good episodes. They are among my favorites of their respective seasons. I've defended these episodes many times, and I will continue to do so as long as I'm alive.

Move Along Home was just plain stupid.
Masks was unintentionally funny. I don't know how Spiner and Stewart were able to keep straight faces during the filming of that dreck.
I'll counter with two better episodes: The Thaw, and Dead Stop.

"The Thaw(VOY)" is one of my top Voyager episodes. Profoundly creepy and a tour de force for Harry Kim. "Dead Stop(ENT)" is also an atmospheric, eerie story that drips menace in almost every scene.
That episode was a hint of the serious, creepy acting to come out of Michael McKean. Who knew Lenny from Laverne & Shirley could be so bat guano unsettling? Goofy voice. Clown makeup. Michael McKean's facial expressions. Just...way more than the ingredients would suggest.
Sometimes comedic actors can surprise you. I've always enjoyed Christopher Lloyd's Kruge from The Search for Spock.
And Jim Carrey was genuinely creepy in The Cable Guy. But then Carrey has shown he has excellent chops for both slapstick humor and more serious roles like Truman Burbank.
Yeah, it was a perfect setup for a future episode of the series or another one but it never happened. Lower Decks writers, are you listening? 
Both of those episodes are great ones, too. I love them pretty much for the same reasons you stated.
I completely love Masks and the exploration of this is alien mythology is a lot of fun.
Move Along Home is less interesting to me, but it is a good episode to show a different side of Quark.
Personally, I would rather watch “A Night in Sickbay” than the “Inner Light”.
If that was the case, it would probably be my favourite Star Trek show, and my favourite captain. Just pack Tilly and Stamets onto the Shenzhou and you pretty much have pure gold.
I actually thought they missed a huge opportunity by not having consistent / regular flash backs to the days aboard the Shenzhou in each episode...almost as a way to show Burnham's development under Gerogiou and her gravitating toward her human half again. I thought that's what they were going to do, as you saw a glimpse of that at the beginning of "Binary Stars" ….but they never went back to it.
I always felt that would have been a good way to explore the character and her backstory, and keep Michelle Yeoh involved without having to re-cast her as her MU self.
