On a similar note, I recall many years back watching a documentary - Maybe about economics, maybe about industrial history? - in which a story was told of two rival companies competing to transport coal from its mine to a power station. The first company built a train line to haul the coal, then the second company built their own to haul it faster. The first company dug a canal instead, and then the second company their own canal. The narrator remarked that two canals and two railway lines had been put in place solely for the purpose of one job. I think streaming services may be headed in this direction - indeed the recent push to make everything a smartphone app is likely to show this problem too.
