The Walking Dead: World Beyond

Critical reception for the new Walking Dead spinoff is... not good.

42% at the moment. The original show is at 81% and Fear is at 73%. Not a good sign.

Some quotes:

"World Beyond's strong performances and new perspective within The Walking Dead universe aren't enough to make it stand out in an increasingly crowded franchise."

"With the end of "The Walking Dead" now officially on the horizon, efforts to wring additional life out of the franchise have taken on greater significance -- and for AMC, urgency. Yet "The Walking Dead: World Beyond" is a minor excursion, feeling too much like the Disney Channel version of a zombie show, minus the catchy songs."

Interestingly, with all critics the score is the above mentioned 42%, but with only top critics, its 66%.

Also, I didn't know that this show is planned as two season long mini-series. That might give teh story a bit more urgency, something the parent show has been lacking.

I think the trailers have all looked awful. I'm going to check it out later tonight though. It can't hurt anything and might play into the larger narrative later.

Supposedly it reveals a lot of information about the black helicopter people. I'll watch it, but the previews have not been inspiring. It looks like Walking Dead: The Millennial Age.

It's not just what it looks like, it's pretty much what they're saying it is...

You are not kidding. The previews are not encouraging at all, and with the parent series ending in 2021, that major anchor--to attract reluctant viewers to a spin-off--will be in the history books, with certain popular cast members long gone to pursue the rest of their careers (e.g. Danai Gurira) i'm betting they will not be recurring guest stars on this series.

Well, yes, but it remains to be seen how much information we'll actually get.

I think the new anchor series is supposed to be the new Daryl and Carol series-- which really just seems like a way of jettisoning most of the cast and ongoing storylines.

So, the Rick movies... With 0 movement on them for this long, probably safe to say that are not happening?

I think at least one of them will happen. He is still the franchises more popular and I would say iconic character. They will want to use him again. Not so sure it will be played in a movie theater. especially after COVID because it won't make enough money but I can see it being released on tv.

I am confused.

Did the Civic Republic Military kill off the Campus Colony or was it an aftermath of a zombie attack that the CRM was dealing with ?

An update on the Rick movie from a little over a week ago.

Maybe spoiler code for those of us waiting until the episode airs Sunday night?

As much as I like the Daryl and Carol characters, that seems like a last, desperate attempt to milk them, and if the final season does not have them ever become romantically involved, the spin-off might end up like endless sitcoms, where a man and woman are "friends", but the plots are filled with "will they / won't they" teases.

I actually like the idea of a Daryl and Carol spin-off. It should also just be the two of them with maybe a couple other characters who show up once in awhile. Have them travel through America to Canada to Mexico looking for something but just them. A return to shows like X-Files or Xena or Quantum Leap were you only got two regulars. Which in this setting makes survival more difficult since you don't got a group to fall back on for protection. Making you vunerable to other human groups and also zombies. Which IMO should be a goal also. Make the zombies feel dangerous again. I could see Carol also getting a bike so they both travel across the land riding motorcycles. This stuff makes me think also that all the current characters are most likely get killed in the end. The few who survive choose to go separate ways. Maybe they pop up once in awhile in guest spots. Judith is reunited with RIck and Michonne somehow. Maybe Negan joins Fear of the Walking Dead.

That sounds great. TWD has too many ancillliary characters that I just don't care about. The ex-Saviors and Magna's whole group mostly.

This is mediocre at best. The one girl needs a slap in the worst way. Too many angst teen tropes and nothing really new here. Probably will give this one or two more episodes and then bail.

And why is it just Carol and Daryl? Is it because the communities have collapsed, or just because they're not needed anymore? I really hope it's the latter. I'd really hate to see all that rebuilding go to waste yet again.

Neither character really likes being around lots of other people.

Hell, I think it was what...Season 8, where Carol was trying to live alone in a small house just poutside 'The Kingdom' and wanted nothing to do with anyone.

Daryl too, has always been more of a loaner when push comes to shove and Carol is pretty much the only person he's really 'let in' emotionally.

So yeah, those to deciding the 'rebuilt/rebuilding of society as it stands in the Zombiie Apocalypse just isn't for them and they're going to go off an find a quiet place to live in 'peace' for their remaining days (and of course NEVEDR being successful at that UNTIL the series ends.
