What can we really say that hasn't been said before? TOS made some tentative but concrete first steps in TV to show the world as a microcosm on a starship. 1966 was a long time ago...

The Television Critics Association (TCA) was proud to bestow the Heritage Award upon Gene Roddenberry’s landmark 1966 sci-fi epic Star Trek, in recognition of the groundbreaking series which brought the future to life — illustrating a unique vision that is equal parts hopeful and cautious as it explored issues such as bigotry, religion, politics, sexism, and human rights through timeless stories of love, war, intrigue, and adventure in outer space — with the help of a strong cast that was among the first to feature an African-American actress in a significant leading role.

Thanks, TCA, even though you're a bit late :)

TOS was the show everyone (except the fans) expected to die and be quickly forgotten. Only it didn't because its whole was greater than the sum of its parts and it resonated in just the right way with the right generation. It was the right show at the right time for the the right audience even if it wasn't initially recogonized as such. Dismissed by the mainstream it went on to flourish while most of its contemporaries and their successors were washed away as afterthoughts.

That can't be denied. In the pantheon of nostalgic historical shows, TOS will always reign supreme.

Even if it and its predecessors didn't quite reach the pinnacle of what this award is for, I will give it credit for setting things in motion. It deserves it in the broadest sense, but yes still well-deserved.

It's very easy to give awards to that which has proven popular for decades. Who cares?
