Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

You cannot die from voluntarily holding your breath because at some point you would pass out and then you would start breathing again. That's how the human body works.

You can't make a general rule for something as complex as the human body, there can always be exceptions. For example, Wenseslao Moguel has survived being shot nine times by a firing squad plus a tenth shot (coup de grace) through his HEAD!!! Look it up.

She’s absolutely right. She didn’t make the rule. :vulcan:
People who gone underwater that long like pearl divers had years of conditioning.

Yeah, actually you CAN make a general rule about something as complex as the human body. That’s why it’s a “general rule” and not an “exception”. Also people have been studying the body for several centuries and the “hold your breath” scenario you’re putting forth is pretty basic stuff.

So why couldn't someone be able to hold their breath indefinitely, the fact that it's not possible for most people is certainly not proof that that someone doesn't exist, now is it?

Because its biologically impossible. Fundamental biochemistry would kick in and kill you.
For a start your cells would run out of energy and start to die. Not to mention the build up of lactic acid from anaerobic respiration would cause acidosis which again pretty much will royally fuck up your organs and kill you.

So no, not possible unless your a single celled organism or a plant.

For extreme cases of divers. They have had years of conditioning around increasing lung capacity, increasing blood/oxygen saturation and possibly slowing metabolic functions reducing oxygen need. Eventually though that oxygen will run out and they will end up dead.

As for breathing itself. It is a reflex built directly into your brain stem. If you hold your breath and pass out you will start breathing again. It is why you dont suffocate in your sleep. So unless you have damage to your brain stem or have taken drugs that suppress your reflexes like benzos or opiates then no you cant hold your breath and die.

Do you think you can hold your breath for 24 minutes? Because someone did.

Source?
Even if that was the case then it is because of conditioning and training. However they would of been conscious and there would still be a limit on how long they can hold as eventually they will die.

As soon as they lost consciousness however reflexes from the brain stem would cause them to breath.

There is something very good about Star Trek.... not many things give me that warm fuzzy feeling.
Just started rewatch of Voyager, while i'm halfway through a ds9 rewatch... it's great! so great!

I've just watched Voyager's "Non-Sequirur" again and I must say. Harry's behavior makes no sense whatsoever. By that point in the series, he had already died once and only a few weeks later he would die again. Anything is better than that!!! Harry's reasons for wanting to put things back to "the way they were" are spurious at best and the alien even warned him that there was a good chance that he would end-up in a reality even more "remotely adequate" than this one, one where he would maybe never have existed! Anyway, the episode would have made more sense or at least some if there was an actual reason for Harry to do what he's done, like maybe the earth waa about to disappear into a black hole or something. Harry for all he knows (at this point) may never see home again, not to mention die (several times btw). Yet he never even considers staying with the "woman he loves" allegedly, and in a reality where he's already received a medal!! I mean the joy of going back to Voyager with no hope of advancement and even the possibility of getting a formal reprimand for having sex!!!

Can anyone here give me one good reason for Harry to do what he did? I think the most logical reason is that his fiancee was one of Worf's former girlfriends and he was afraid of being beaten up!!!:rommie:
