As far as I'm concerned there's nothing fundamentally wrong with discussing LGBTQ+ representation on Lower Decks here. But if you are going to do it you've got to do it without getting personal, is that clear? Also, people come here to discuss an episode of Lower Decks – not Discovery, and they certainly don't want to watch the same people repeat the same kind of back-and-forth every other week.

A lot of the humor on the show is *very* adolescent and the character development is quirk driven and emotionally base the way you usually see on family sitcoms. If they aren’t making this with kids in the 12-14 range primarily in mind, they need to smart up their writing.

We can have different ideas about when young people cease to be ‘Kids’. At 14 I might have not like being called a kid but now at 37 I’ll see some 20 year olds that way.

Still wouldn’t expect shows aimed at that age to joke about holodecks having discharge filters without coding it more, especially in the Helicopter era of parenting.

I feel no shame in wanting diversity for its own sake. As much as I want characters of any type, stories that are exciting or dramatic or funny, or ships that look cool, or good acting or directing or anything else, I have no need to justify it, so why do I have to for this? That's what I want in my Lower Decks. In my Star Trek.

Culber had a compelling arc in the second season coming to terms with being whatever he became after returning from the Mycellial Network and sought out help from Admiral Cornwell (who was a trained psychologist) at one point. He also had issues with Tyler and wanted to --- justifiably from his point of view -- settle a score. But you can't see passed his orientation.

All I'll say about this since this isn't the DSC Forum. I just wanted to point out that Culber became more than he was during the first season.

You're right Culber did visit Admiral Cornwell for a pep talk in one scene. Cool.

Hopefully they make him a worthwhile character in season 3 that actually adds something to the show. Maybe we can find something about him too, apart from the fact that he likes opera.

Culber’s character growth was excellent in S2. Played a critical role in the overall arc and his evolution while working through his existential pain was well thought out and believable. But, to be fair, he was nothing much more than a fleshy blow-up doll for Stamets in S1. Glad they finally figured his character out.

Depends on the child, in my experience. Some yes, others no. There are jokes at 36 that I consider to be inappropriate for any age.

However, developmentally and socially, there are jokes that are directed at that age range that would be less appropriate for younger ages. Not that that stops any one.

Like The Orville, it works better as a light drama more than a comedy. If they get a season 3/4 renewal, they should lean into that more.

My inner nerd objects to Mariner's behavior less because it's obnoxious than because I don't think it would be tolerated by Starfleet.

I think the reason why she hasn't been "Booted Out" of StarFleet despite probably "Saving the Ship" on multiple occaisions in her career by this point and having been probably "Demoted" multiple times is her connections. Her Admiral Dad & Captain Mom are what is keeping her in StarFleet for some parental reason, probably trying to make her grow up. The rest of StarFleet was like, I'm not going to deal with this brat, your her mother and a Captain, you take her.

Tendi's too obsessed with wanting to be liked.

Orion women are probably not used to being "Disliked". Probably after joining StarFleet / UFP and getting "Modified" so that she doesn't affect all the men, she's probably not used to rejection in any form after a life time of ALWAYS being liked.

Whatever comedy plane LD is on, I’m just not there with them...at all...yet.

The whole Mariner yawning and disrupting the meeting fell flat and was borderline annoying. Then the “get rid of Mariner” subplot began and that was just as unfunny.

I did like the generational ship storyline. and the hull eating liquid. I wish this story had been a bigger part of the episode.

I suppose the cringey Mariner/Freeman stuff at the beginning was a setup for the very enjoyable mom/daughter stuff after the two were trapped. That is the kind of stuff I’d like to see more of from those two.

So, what happened too the crew from the other ship after they were beamed to the generational ship?

Nope, it's implied that if they're to be part of the UFP/SF, that their pheromones would be nerfed in some way.

The writers are INTENSE nerds. She's probably got a vast Orion backstory.
