Enjoyed the second episode a lot. It's great to see a show that has the heart of Star Trek.

I'm liking Mariner a lot more than I thought I would, though the she's amazing at everything routine is getting predictable and tedious. Any chance Boimler can be the good, competent guy and show her up, for once, or is that not allowed?

He probably will. Have to give some hope to all the Boimler's (myself included) out there :guffaw:

Yes. All those other shows just had the spleen of Trek, maybe the lungs or the pancreas. The heart is were it is at...:vulcan::rommie:

Give it an 8, liked it but it seemed to me to go a bit to fast, cram to much into 26 minutes. But enjoyable, probably better on a 2nd watch.

Don't see mariner as a know it all, just that she has climbed the rungs, probably like the other guy, followed the rules, and got her demoted, so shes like screw this, and attempting to teach him to lighten up and enjoy ... In an asshole way possible.. :rommie:

Klingons, Andorians, and Ferengi... Oh My!

Rutherford trying the command simulation was

What’s the Janeway Protocol?

Of course Mariner is friends with the Klingon General AND the Ferengi.

That poor energy being, forced to squish itself.

:techman:

That briefly crossed my mind during the episode, except I find Mariner way more likeable than Burnham, so I don't have a problem with it.

100 million times more likeable than Burnham.

Get the characters right, as this show seems to have done, and you're half way there. I do wish it would slow down a tad though, I'm getting flashbacks to the opening hour of The Rise of Skywalker, everything on fast forward and no time to breathe.

Loved it; an easy 9. Mariner’s a delight, and everyone being super encouraging of Rutherford was really nice to see. Laughed out loud a number of times.

I would gladly talk about things I liked. Even in movies or shows that I dislike, there can often be something, a scene a performance or even just one joke that I liked.

I despised "The Rise of Skywalker", for instance, but even I will admit that the idea of a lightsaber fight via the force where the combatants aren't in the same place was actually cool.

No offense meant, but you said "I would gladly talk about things I liked" and then proceeded to talk about another thing you hated.

People might have an easier time understanding why this isn't your jam if you say what is.

Didn't Burnham need to be rescued by the Discovery in the very 2nd episode of DIS when her prison shuttle malfunctioned and DIS tractor beamed them in, or else they would have eventually been asphyxiated?

Didn't Pike need to save her in Season 2 Ep 1 (Brother) when she became disabled on that asteroid?
Burnham was Boimler not a Mariner. She's still a bit of a Boimler.

I still haven't laughed*, but I enjoyed parts of ep 2. I think I liked the B-story more than the A, but that may be due to a strong dislike of Mariner. (It will be hilarious for me to look back and see how much I didn't like her if they pull an Ahsoka on us and slowly turn her into the best character on the show.)

I assume that was the Klingon with the eyepatch who gave Mariner her bat-leth.

It's nice to see them continue to mine Trek lore all over the place. I don't give them extra points for having that stuff though, it's just what should already be there by virtue of being Trek. I'm at, "I see a Ferengi." rather than, "Holy cow, a Ferengi! Woah." :)

*There was a tiny bit with Boimler that almost made me smirk, but I've forgotten what it was.

The part where he story boarded a TNG episode with his "I will end up on an asteroid research lab" rant?

She’s not more amazing than Boimler or the rest of the characters, she simply has more experience. It really is a Dax-type situation.

As Boimler points out he and Mariner are "like the same age" so it makes no sense she has "more experience" and is so world hardened.

And, contrary to some opinions, her experience is completely understandable despite being "about the same age" (23?) as Boimler. Boimler seems to have come from Earth, with no outside visits (except for Vulcan) until the Academy, but Mariner most likely grew up on starships with her Starfleet parents and has been having these grand adventures since before she can remember. She knows everything and has done everything because she suffered through "23 seasons" of situations spanning the entire era of TNG and DS9.
