if you try to eliminate lingo altogether you make the dialogue bland. if you go the hard route and try to develop all new lingo and dialects like The Expanse you end up demanding a lot of your audience. For a comedy animated series they went the easy route, and its understandable.

Understandable yes, but it makes me wonder if this show is canon.

This was actually better than I expected. The first guest should be Tim Russ as Tuvok, he'd make a perfect contrast to these characters.

(Mariner accidentally overloads the dining hall replicators with overly crispy burnt pizzas, so in true Starfleet manner of adaptation to mishaps, Tendi decides to make use of them as an impromptu Starfleet training exercise, tossing them like frisbees while Boimler shoots them with his phaser).

Tuvok: Please excuse me ensigns, I am overdue for a conference call with, uh, Neelix. (promptly leaves the scene)

A 6 from me.

It was alright. (At least none of the characters are your typical TNG-era 100% emotionally well adjusted style mannequins - even the senior staff). Everybody is an actual relatable human being <--- Which is a unique take on the Star Trek TNG era, and a refreshing one for me.

Some small chuckles here and there; but IMO - from someone who worked on "Rick & Morty" I was hoping they'd take it a bit farther into parody, but no, I suppose they DO want to somewhat fit it into the actual TNG era, which for me is a bit disappointing.

Overall, it is pretty much what I originally expected "The Orville" to be like before I actually watched that show. IMO "Lower Decks" is more entertaining and actually occasionally funny compared to "The Orville" (YMMV).

Episode 1 piqued my interest enough that I'll keep watching.

A few wonky bits here and there and I’m not too keen on Mariner being the Captains daughter. But overall I liked it quite a bit.

ranking this an 8.
It makes sense given the way she acts. She's a Starfleet brat, probably raised on starships and has been all over the galaxy. She flouts Starfleet rules because it's what she's been doing her whole life as a form of rebellion from her parents.

The real question is, how do we fit this into canon
The only thing that doesn't fit is the commbadge. Everything else can fit perfectly, as far as I can see.

Strange though how They are bleeping out the Doctor's swearing, especially with DISCOVERY & PICARD going full throttle in that regard.
I thought the show was pretty good. My only real gripe is the bleeps. If you're going to say shit and fuck, just say shit and fuck.
That could be a meta comment on all the outrage over Disco and PIC swearing XD

The guy Ransom bit into the neck turned into a zombie and got up again right away (he's the guy Rutherford and his date watched transform) and after cleanup it was probably a matter of, as Mariner put it, "shining a light" over his injury.
That could also be a meta comment on a certain politician suggesting light as a cure XD

I feel if I were less intelligent it might have appealed to me more.
Maybe if I had the mental capacity of an 8 year old I might have found the desire to ever contemplate watching another.
I'm a scientist and I like it.

A few wonky bits here and there and I’m not too keen on Mariner being the Captains daughter.
I guess she wants to be demoted so she can be with her mom ;)

I thought it was pretty funny, but I'm not sure why they are talking with 21st century lingo?
The one exchange that really annoyed me was: "That's what I'm talkin' about!" - "Yeah!"

Is it me (probably) or was there something Galaxy Quest-y about the theme song?
I also found it very similar to the GQ show theme

Well, that sucked. Congrats on being 0 for 3, CBSAA Trek.
So much of the show seems poorly conceived.
It's not my fault the show fucking sucks, as it wasn't my fault that Voyager, Picard and Discovery all sucked, too.
It's the laziest kind of fan service bullshit.
Okay, cool. Not to me.
If it's "a comedy", it should be funny. It wasn't.
Very thin justification for such a bad, annoying and obviously fan serivcey joke.
I think we got it.

It was an OK time-waster, I guess. I thought the "classical [music] group" reference was stupid. I still plan to watch next week, though.

The idea of (to us) relatively contemporary music being considered "classical" is a joke that was explored more in depth in Star Trek Beyond. But it can be traced to the use of the literary term "the Giants" in Star Trek IV for modern authors Harold Robbins and Jacqueline Susann.

It kinda disregards the fact that "Classical music" refers to a specific style of European music originating or emulating symphonies from the late Renaissance to the 19th century, and is not a mere statement of age (as was once applied in Classic Rock for a time, which has quickly become its own style as well). The term "old music" or perhaps "archaic music" would be more correct, but perhaps less funny.
