True, we don't know for sure whether women will still be sexualized and objectified, and in the same manner as in the 20th century, while men will not. But I somehow doubt it. Plus, isn't Trek future supposed to be better, equal rights, even utopian? Strangely, for some of those who insist how much humanity will have evolved, that never seems to be an issue when the rights or the depiction of women are concerned. As Seven would say: Curious.
Plus regardless of the way the clothing is perceived in-universe (everything actually points towards Troi's clothing being the 24th century equivalent of "business causal") Star Trek TNG/DS9/Voy/ENT are TV shows, created by and aimed at 20th/very early 21st century people. So you can't just disregard the real world reason why Troi and other attractive female characters were put into body hugging costumes instead of uniforms (while male characters were usually not), only because those clothes might be viewed differently within the fictional universe of the show.
What if ladies of the future want to be objectified and if men try to stand out with something sexual it's frowned upon. What if women are more free to wear what they want and men's clothing is very restricted. Women are more free in that way. Some kind of progression, right? Women wear what they want, men don't. But sweaters are cool.

If Seven had been a man he'd never have been put in spandex. Part of the whole concept of Seven was to draw in more of the most sought after target demographic (males 18-40) and the easiest and simplest way to do that is to objectify women, so having a blonde with exaggerated boobs in a skin-tight catsuit on all the marketing is going to do that, they'll tune in for the hot sci-fi babe. Put a hot man with an ample endowment in the same catsuit and you'll lose the viewers you want, despite possibly attracting others. There are a couple of interesting articles on Forgotten Trek around the issue of what Troi (as well as other female actors) wore such as the Uniforms and looking at Sexism and Gender Roles in TNG.
I'm a straight guy and while I understand the catsuit discussion and all that about Seven and other tightly clad women in Trek, I've never got why Deanna has been labelled as eye candy. She's not my type? Sorry, but her clothing isn't that revealing. Occasionally tight but that's about it.

There is a picture in this thread of Troi and Crusher wearing very tight clothing( they have the body suits on backwards or they were just made incorrectly) Their outfits are pretty revealing. Being able to see someone's butt crack seems to be revealing.

Yeah the whole concept was ridiculous, and a reflection of the men in charge and Gene's 'wonderful vision' when it came to his main female staff.
Really, older than your mom? Not sure if you are male or female or + But I know my brothers never seemed to mind the women in the original Trek, who were older than our mom, or Ellie Mea on the Beverly Hillbillies, older than our mom or Rachel Welsh (sp?) who was Older than our mom. It's extremely narrow minded that you can't appreciate, seemingly, anything older than your mother. Does that include, music, art and literature?

I’m sorry, what was I saying? EDIT: oh, right. Yeah, clearly she was gorgeous, and that’s what the uniform was about. I mean, get a clue. She, Yar, and dancing legs Crusher were all gorgeous and in form-fitting uniforms and outfits, and the reasoning is as clear as the curves of their hips.

The space ships drew in the kids, Dad got to watch Dee's barely contained bust, and Mom knew that if she was just given a little time, that should could make Riker shave his beard, and he would be pretty again. I'm pretty much the same, until Trip appeared on screen. Yes please! Mmmm, Helo Clearly men can be objectified as much as women, but given the industry Trek is made in then the focus will always be on making women as much eye candy as anything else--it's a really sad thing to say, but until there are massive changes then it's just a sign of societal perceptions and beliefs. If the PTB were to make uniforms uniform and give everyone on the cast a choice of skin-tight one-piece or more relaxed two-piece, or have it that each cast member would spend the same amount of time in each, it won't end inequality or bring about a great social revolution, but it would be a step in the right direction, then they could move on to having an equal number of women in the cast as men (or maybe even including people who identify as something else) as well as in the writing room, on the production team, all paid the same, then they'd be making a stand and practicing what they preach.
