the short treks are better than discovery and picard, so congrats. I am just scared this will go to Alex Kurtzman's head. he may convince himself even more he is doing great with star trek when he isn't.

the emmys like most awards are now very political. its political tick box first then talent and art second.

Kurtzman already has A Writer's Guild Award nom (the first and only for a Star Trek movie!) and a Peabody and Hugo nom to the show's credit, now 5 Emmys for Picard and 4 for Discovery last year. Kurtzman pushed for Short Treks and he deserves the credit.

I'll give credit to Chabon too, who's entry this year "Ask Not"--while not as good as Calypso-handled the material in a knowing, adept fashion and probably put it over the top.

Are you saying Short Treks getting a nomination is political? LOL

Vanilla Ice and New Kids On The Block are Grammy nominees. Britney Spears and Milli Vanilli actually won one.

    It means nothing.

Kurtzman could win "Greatest Writer In the Universe" and he'd still be a hack. Him and Akiva are the Milli Vanilli of Star Trek.

    Cool. Awards mean nothing.

Well, that which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

He is as far as I'm concerned, and presumably as far as those who have put him in power are concerned.

If he is encouraged to deliver more of the same, so much the better. :)

Congrats to Kurtzman and his staff. Considering this nomination and the slew of noms and wins for DSC, I’d say he is definitely on the right track with a Trek streaming shows.

I do like the Short Treks far more than Discovery and Picard. Maybe because they're not one long story (a depressing one in Picard and confused one in Discovery).

Movie and TV award shows, much like the art they reward, have always been political (e.g. How Green Was My Valley winning Best Picture over Citizen Kane). I get the sense they only "became" political when they didn't favor whatever your personal beliefs are.

Emmy voters are members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences who, while given guidance and rules on how to vote, as well as voting within select panels on a limited number of specialized categories, have the option of using their own criteria for choosing a nominee or winner.

To many Academy members, "politics" or "diversity" or "social activism" is just as important as a representation of artistic measure as anything they do with lighting and cameras and computer generation.

Yes, but I'll at least consider their opinion more seriously than yours.

Your opinion.......means nothing to most others. There's WAY more than Kurtzman on the team that brings this to you. I am sure they are all worried about your deeming them not worthy of a nod.

I'm happy to see CBS has put up the Short Treks in the US on Youtube for free so voters have easy access, and a few non-subscribers can watch it too.

I really want them to give Calypso an honorary Emmy nod too since I thought it was going to get nominated last year! Just took a little longer. :)

Happily, Modern Trek scores on all these points.

Just like how all art is inevitable if not always subjective in reception, regardless of how it is given. I will say this, the tribble cereal parody at the end of one of those shorties is one of the funniest things ever for the most obvious demographic (Gen-X, who grew up watching the actual commercials).

Art also has been political for decades if not longer, the level of subtlety being one of the main variables. Grant Wood and Norman Rockwell used politics, very slyly in some cases. Or that's what some of those viewing their works decided. For all we know, Picasso was the biggest politician ever and nobody's figured it out yet*.

    * Okay, I'm more or less sure he wasn't (51%), and only had more fun painting some of his own perceptions as they were unique rather than cookie-cutter.

Diversity is very important to some Emmy voters, no doubt, however, I also believe those Academy members, as well as content producers, know that diversity and artistic quality have no correlation and both exist on parallel lines.

But ironically, this is something fans often don’t know, as many think that just because a show aims at diversity, it automatically puts artistic quality on the back burner. Not true, of course, but ignorance never dies easily.

This is someone who's very obviously never seen "Calypso". Or maybe you have and just don't want to admit it's good because it'll destroy your image if you do.

I'm not an art guy, like at all, but I do know that Picasso painted Guernica, which was a huge political statement. Anti-Francoist in a time when Franco was winning (and ultimately won) the Spanish Civil War.

I liked Calypso and have previously stated so.
