Top 10 most popular US digital original shows during the COVID lockdown since March 1st. Picard is 8th during this period. Additionally Picard is in the top 20 in the last 30 days with 22.9x the demand of the market average. Discovery, by comparison, is also in the top 20 with 20.5x the market average.

I do not understand the staying power of Stranger Things.......The last season dropped 10 months ago. Do "these kids today" just watch it every day like we used to watch MASH and Gilligan's Island? YES I'M SHOWING MY AGE!!!!!!

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I love the show but once I watch the season I'm done.

It just goes to show you, shows like The Office, or newer shows like Stranger Things can have awesome repeat viewing power. Trek is a sort of niche by comparison. The fact Discovery has been holding in the top 20 for a while is very impressive too.

Picard and Discovery have definitely been part of my lockdown routine. Picard’s release was timed perfectly! Very sad that Discovery season 3 has been delayed though as it would have been the jewel in my lockdown viewing crown!

Apparently, the answer for some of "these kids today" is - as with us - yes. Possibly with a swear word in front of the affirmative. ;)

I thought the new Star Trek shows were the worst things ever produced for television in the history of mankind.

How is this even possible, given that obvious fact?

This isn't exactly a measurement of popularity. This is not based purely on the number of actual people watching these shows. This metric is based on a formula which is influenced by things like social media activity.

Shows that get commented on a lot, and spark a lot of debate, are going to do well using this metric. Ironically, all the hateful comments STD and Picard get probably help them in these ratings.

Correct, it is a much more accurate and broader data set of overall popularity than simple eyeballs and it's been designed to give companies a good idea of the overall "buzz" of a show. The company filters more biased sources and weights active participation, views and downloads higher. CBS International now uses the data set, so it's directly relevant to them and the show.

Popularity is a poor measure of quality, particularly in the arts. If we use popularity to judge quality, then "Gucci Gang", in all its stupidity, is a better piece of Music than Beethoven's fifth, John Cage's Etudes Australes and Stairway to Heaven all put together..

(this is not a statement on the quality of the shows mentioned, just rebuting the argumentum ad populum)

In this particular case you're barking up the wrong tree, there was no claim of quality here, just popularity. While certainly you can make the case for Picard being a quality show, with good critical reaction and Emmy nods, popularity is mostly useful for keeping shows in production.

And the Emmy nods are just for special effects and make-up. That will pique the interest of some to see just how good various scenes look.

I was answering someone sarcastically using the adjective "worst", not "unpopular". VGer23's statement can be paraphrased as "how could it be so popular if it's as bad as people say?"
I was pointing out that the two qualities are unrelated, and demonstrating it so by citing an counter-example of a something that is quite terrible in any quality metric, yet nonethless popular.

Picard didn't get any Emmy nods for special effects (and rightly so). Its nods were hair-styling, prosthetics, makeup, sound editing. Not quite as wide ranging as they'd have liked I'm sure.

Especially in contrast to something like The Mandalorian which got FIFTEEN nods, including best drama show. Not bad for a show someone on here (@RAMA) said was safe and boring.

You still don't get he was fired, right?!

It's nice to see Picard is still popular. I don't care if what I think is a good show is viewed by anyone else, except popularity will keep it in production, which I very much care for.
