My 1/350 TOS Enterprise build (repaired)

Chris PikE

Commander
Red Shirt
Here is my personal 1/350 Enterprise build. I had to dismantle and remove some electronics to complete another build for a friend. However, Now it's back to it's former glory and then some! The five star pattern seen in the Engine Nacelles slightly ramp down then back up again. Here's what I did...

Paint. The model was originally airbrushed a custom mix of colors(If you are boring like me and want the model to reflect the actual filming miniature, you have to mix the paint...it can't be obtained from a rattle can), The Original paints were Tamiya and model Master. The repairs were addressed with Tamiya and Vallejo Paints, Again, Airbrushed. At the time of its construction all the reference material from the restoration was yet to be had...so I used my reference photos. Once theInfo was shared by our friend, Gary Kerr, I went back and made adjustments accordingly!

Lighting... Originally I used the Polar Lights lighting kit. However I found it not to my liking so I basically torn it down and built my own lighting rig. Special attention was given to the engine lights. I wanted them to replicate the original Miniature's effect as close as possible.

Weathering... Accomplished with Air brush, paint brush, pastels, pencils, paper towel, tissue, my finger and my Shirt!

A video is more descriptive than just a photo, so here it is on my kitchen counter!

Dismantle? Excuse me for asking but I assumed that usually models of this kind are glued together? How does one take it apart again without damaging anything?
Also, how long does a model last? I've built the AMT/ERTL kit a decade or so ago and after a while it started to sag and slowly warped in places and I don't mean warp factor 9 :p;)

As for this model, it looks great. :mallory: your modifications to the lighting are spot on. :mallory:

Thanks! Perhaps I should have been a bit more descriptive in my repairs, my apologies for the misunderstandings! Yes, the model is permanently cemented together. The saucer, neck, secondary hull , supports for the nacelles and the nacelles themselves are quite fixed. However, I had to remove Front of the Engine Nacelle to gain access to the wiring and motors. A delicate procedure, but I built mine in such a way I could replace/rewire the motors should they fail at some point. Also the whole deflector dish assembly is removable so ,again, I can gain access to the motherboard for the electronics.

I had to remove the front engines on both nacelles so it was sitting about with the wires and motors hanging out for a week or so.
Everything is back in place and good to go now!

Hey, thank you for explaining. I think it is really a terrific job that you've thought ahead and built in the possibility adjusting/replacng parts when you've built the model.

Quite nice!
There was one company releaseing "Correct" color set for the Tos, Can't remember there name, were at Wonderfest a few years ago. Freind got a set.
What paints/colors did you use to replicate the color palete?

I mixed my colors using Tamiya and Model Master paints originally. However, Testors has discontinued the Model Master line. So now I use Vallejo paints...for the discrete touch ups.

As in what colors? I build to, and have a couple 1000 tos's, and to my mind a lightened model master Fulcrum Grey Green seems close enough for me, but if you have a combo that comes closer, would like to try! Have quite a good rack of Vellejo at the local hobby shop if you could tell me what colors and what % mixes you used if you know?

Roger that! Let me get my notes and I'll get back to you!

I think he stated elsewhere that he wouldn't build any ship for someone else anymore which I can understand, it has to stay fun.

Yes...I have two more TOS builds and Two 1/350 Refits to do. I need a LOOOOOONG break from these. I put a ton of work and mods into them to get them as accurate as possible. I won't be building these for anyone else in the near future ,or ever!

I completely understand. My CGI hobby burned me out a decade ago and I didn’t touch it again for 10 years. When your hobby turns into what feels like a job and then you start to hate your job, you know that it’s time to step away.
