What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

But hasn't the franchise earned the benefit of the doubt? At least enough so to watch more than a single episode before passing judgement.

In my case , I think that TOS, VOY, and ENT all have more episodes that I don't like than I do. However, if I had given up on them after only an episode or two, I would have missed on more than 100 good to great ones.

If I don't enjoy a show I don't watch it, and it doesn't matter what franchise it is part of.
Why should I force myself through something I dislike? Life's too short for that.

I'm not saying that you have to force yourself to watch all of them. I'm saying that I don't think one or two episodes are enough to judge series that lasted multiple years. And I think that the fact that you guys like other Trek series indicates that there is a very good chance that you would find something of value in the others.

I mean, if I don't like Titus Andronicus, should I just assume that Shakespeare is a hack?

Think of your favorite show. Now think of the absolute worst episode of that show. If that was the first episode of that show that someone saw, do you think they would be making a mistake to dismiss the entire series?

Been there and no. Their choice.

I find value in TNG and VOY and ENT. I think all of those set up PIC and DSC in ways that are not immediately appreciated by fans. But, I don't actively seek the series out either. It just is.

For me, CBS Trek has gotten the benefit of the doubt. I made it through two seasons of Discovery and seven episodes of Picard. Lower Decks, Discovery season three and Strange New Worlds will have a much shorter leashes.

There's just too much good TV out there to wait around for current Trek to get good.

I keep dipping my toe in to see if the magic of TOS can be recaptured. I have seen S1 of Next Gen, S1 of Enterprise, S1 of Discovery. I have more fun rewatching TOS.

Hmm...you might like "Observer Effect" from season 4 of Enterprise. Season three's "North Star" also has a bit of a TOS feel.

For me Picard S2, Lower Decks and SNW will have a longer leash for me than Disco S3. They really gotta knock it outta the park and so far they’ve only shown they can at best hit doubles.

The magic of TOS can never be recaptured. That's an impossible standard.

from a character perspective I think DS9 and ENT are the only two that have gotten close.

Without spoiling too much, everybody is a lot happier for large stretches of Season 2. And they get a temporary captain who's a lot more likable than the last one...
I don’t dispute that, but, actually—and maybe this is another controversial opinion, I don’t know—I thought Lorca was one of the more likable characters on Discovery. He proved himself a competent and trustworthy commander early on. And I felt really jerked around when the crew mutinied against him and he got killed. He was a grey character, but no more so than Burnham, and much less so than Georgiou.

Ezri Dax was a better character than Jadzia Dax, as she had potential to develop and grow as a person.

The only movie that I loved was First Contact

Discovery did a good job of making the NCC-1701’s bridge look more futuristic while also preserving the general aesthetic.

This has been bugging me for some time,

An aspect of “E2” makes no sense to me, particularly how the crew pairs off in their situation.

The crew is aware of the polyamorous relationships that Denoubulans have (considering their doctor is one), and seem okay with it. However, once they are thrown back in time and unable to interact with anyone in order to not disturb the unfolding of future events, they don’t engage in something similar like polyandry despite the crew being 1/3 women. Sato paired off with someone, Mayweather paired off with a MACO, Phlox paired off with a MACO (despite already having three wives!), Archer paired off with an Ikaaran captain who is not a part of his crew and Trip & T’Pol paired off with each other. Only Reed had the misfortune of not pairing off with anyone. Not even an LGBT+ relationship.

Even if someone makes the argument that Earth at the time was more conservative and they discarded those beliefs, polyandry should have been at least acknowledged as being practised by members of the crew in that alternate timeline, but it wasn’t. To accept how the pairing offs were explained strikes me as something that might get accepted by a high schooler, but not someone who went to university and took an anthropology class.

Alternate timeline or not, Reed basically got screwed over here.

Try any season after S2 of TNG, DS9, and ENT, and after S3 of VOY.

And In a Mirror, Darkly ;)

Maybe the crew didn't want to have polyamorous relationships? But also a lot of people take what Reed's outcome is and suggest that a whole bunch of the male crew didn't end up in any relationship, when all the episode says is Reed didn't. Maybe Reed isn't gay or even if he had any attraction to blokes none of the guys on the ship were his type, meanwhile every other guy paired up. Maybe there were dozens of polyamorous marriages but everyone thought Reed sucked as a partner and said GTFO.

I think it's also made clear that Reed had issues with becoming close to people. He was emotionally reserved to the point of isolation from his family. It took a life-threatening situation for him to develop a friendship with Trip. It's implied in his letters to old girlfriends that he'd had strings of short-term or low-commitment relationships that never got to a stage of lasting emotional intimacy.

Another factor could be that even in the real world, the relationships some refer to as "polyamorous" often have a primary partner. The pairings could just reflect the primary relationships, while other sexual and romantic relationships could have happened before, during, or after marriage.

To me it's also not so shocking that polyamorous relationships weren't explicitly referred to on the Enterprise. Star Fleet is a pseudo-military organisation, and in the early days you were working in close quarters with a limited number of people. It's understandable how sexual relationships with one, let alone multiple, partners could be taboo because of their possible effects on working relationships among the crew. They would happen, but I can't imagine they would be encouraged.

The biggest factor is probably a production decision, though. For all of Trek's forward thinking, it's really quite conservative in what it depicts on screen, especially regarding sex.

I can't wait to see SNW, Lower Decks, and DSC Season 3.

I'm not even sure I want to watch Picard anymore after that season finale. I think it was the worst one in franchise history, and actually lowered my overall enjoyment of the series.

I've been rewatching S2 of Discovery and it made realize it's a great and SNW has a great start with that as an intro to cast and ship. Lower Decks, I need to see a trailer first.

Picard..... I'm going to rewatch season 1 soon. I'm undecided.

I totally agree with that. It's especially true when you include the - quite excellent - Short Treks with the SNW crew in them. I think Q&A is right up there with any Trek content I've watched. To be honest, I love Short Treks. I think they're brilliant.

The second set of Short Trek isn't available here yet unfortunately.
