The shutdown allowed me to pull out some old games that I never played much after I got them. I just finished the Star Trek game from 2013. Reviews were very bad back then, people criticized the gameplay, controls, and graphics. It was considered a huge failure when it was supposed to be a hit. I found the graphics pretty good though, and everything is recreated really well. Did anyone else here play it?
I played it and really enjoyed it when it first came out, but I tried to do a second play through a few months ago and got frustrated during the space battle and quit.
I thought it was playable and fun but nothing special. The constant banter between the characters throughout was the highlight.
The biggest problem was how unremarkable it was. Mass Effect doesn't have the most amazing combat and gameplay but it makes up for it with the story, characters, and interactivity. The Star Trek Game had average everything, plus was a few years behind graphically. It's certainly not as bad as everyone made it out to be, but it doesn't come close to Mass Effect or Uncharted which were the main sources of inspiration according to the devs.
No, but when you claim that your game is going to be like a combination of Mass Effect and Uncharted set in the Star Trek universe, It had better be more than just a very average shooter.
Meh, the reason I didn't try the game was because of the ME references. Hearing that it wasn't is actually more interesting to me than it being like ME. Mileage, etc.
It's definitely much shorter than ME, and it has no interactive story elements other than choosing if you want to play as Kirk or Spock. It's a game you can easily plow through in a weekend, whereas ME is more of a timesink.
One other thing that I'll say the game has in its favor that isn't talked about much is the music. If you like the scores in the three movies, you'll like the score in the game as well.
The theme is a little more impressive with the added drums, that's right! It makes sense that ME, which didn't have to get established characters, sets, props, stories right and fit with a franchise license, could focus more on gameplay. All the money and effort that went into designing the Enterprise levels and main characters then wasn't available for refining the controls, level design, and complexity. But I enjoy games that don't require too much time and effort from me and can be casually enjoyed every now and then with a gentle learning curve XD
I wish they'd added the feature from Elite Force where you could explore the ship. With everything already modeled, it shouldn't have been difficult.
Yeah, I should probably have phrased that better. I didn’t mean to say that it should have been a more ME-like experience, just that all the things that I, personally, would want from a modern Star Trek game are present in the Mass Effect series.
For me it was a bugfest, but I didn´t try it for years. Did they ever release patches? It isn´t even available anywhere AFAIK.
I haven't played it, but I watched a play-through on Youtube (new Star Trek story, after all), and it certainly was boring watch (though I know that's not the fairest criteria on which to judge a game). I did get a kick out of one thing that happens in the game actually getting mentioned by McCoy in Into Darkness (one of the few things I liked in that movie).
