Spoilers Batwoman - Season 1

RUMOR

The Scarecrow will be introduced and kill Ryan's mother

According to our contributing insider Daniel Richtman, there are plans to introduce Jonathan Crane AKA Scarecrow as a villain in Season 2, with casting for the role now underway. Scarecrow will be responsible for the murder of Ryan Wilder’s mother, which motivates her to want to become Batwoman.

Additionally, it's been revealed that Kate Kane will die in the second season of Batwoman, although the details of how are currently unknown. After Kane’s death, Wilder manages to steal Kane's Batwoman suit in order to hunt down Scarecrow and seek revenge.

Well, there goes my speculation that they were bringing in a new lead to keep their options open for bringing Rose back on a recurring basis.

Reading the above, I was thinking, I know Scarecrow's MO but what is his motivation? I'm not really sure what makes him tick.

Short version: he's a sadist.
Slightly less short version: he's a "bullied as a child" type psychopath with a mania for fear in general and phobias in particular (mostly to inflict upon others.) Became a psychologist. Abused his patients. Invents "fear gas". Goes completely off the deep end. Batman smash. Onto the rogues gallery merry-go round he goes...

So would this mean he's still at large, or will the plot have him escaping from Arkham? Aside the Arkham scene in Elseworlds and the mention that Batman probably killed Joker, there's been very little mention of the status of Batman's old rogue's gallery.

If that's really what they're going to do then... blah.

I was kind of hoping, rather then just killing her off, they'd have Kate leave offscreen after becoming disillusioned with being Batwoman and possibly taking Sophie with her. Have her be the one who chose Wilder as her replacement because she realized there needs to be a Batwoman even if it's not her. If Sophie went with her then they could've brought in a new character for Wilder's love interest.

With an abrupt departure like this I doubt that was ever in the cards to happen.

As I've said, I don't think it was as abrupt as it seemed. The news broke just days after the finale aired, which suggests they were sitting on the news until the season was over so as not to dampen enthusiasm. And the fact that they already had a new part sufficiently developed to send out a casting notice just a couple of weeks after the finale confirms that they've been working on this for a while now, since well before we heard about it. Creating a whole new series lead is not done that quickly.

Also, just on general principles, it's wise in this business to keep your options open. Often, things change in ways you never anticipated. Someone recently mentioned Viper and how its lead who left after the first season was convinced to come back for season 4. So even if things were tense now, it could've been worth leaving room for her to come back if that changed later on.

From some of the comments made in the last week or two, it sounds like there was more to her leaving than just not being able to handle the intense schedule, so there's a chance they might not want to leave things open for her to return.

Sure. I just thought, initially, that wanting to leave the option open might have been a factor in choosing to replace Kate rather than just recasting her. If this new report is true, then that wasn't the case after all.

Yeah, word is that the sentiment from the crew at least was along the lines of "don't let the door hit you on the way out!"
Don't know if that sentiment is shared by the cast or higher ups side of things, but given this supposedly comes from her taking out her dislike for the long hours on everyone else...quite possibly.

I mean not to say I told ya so or anything, but I DID say way back when that I wasn't sure she could handle being a lead on a network show. Admittedly that was mostly from an acting chops standpoint, but the hours are all part and parcel.
Crews love to gossip, especially about "difficult" performers, and unfortunately for her this is likely to hamper any future she had in TV.

If that's true then I suppose the question is, if the full season had been shot would there have been a smoother transition?

As it is now, it looks she'll either have died between episodes or with someone else playing her in the costume on screen.
