Movies that never were... Or things you wish were movies.

^ Reminds me of Heinlein’s ‘World as Myth’ stories (The Number of the Beast, etc.)

Those would be pretty fun to see, albeit some major rewrites would probably be in order. But the ‘story bones’, in general, are pretty good.

Cheers,

There was a trilogy of books in the early-mid 80s called the 'Cineverse Cycle' by Craig Shaw Gardner where an average Joe discovers that pretty much every TV Trope you see on the big screen exists in some form or another.

There's a 'Mad Scientist ' world, a 'Film Noir' world that's back and white complete with a Sam Spade character and voiceover, narration, a 'Talking Animals ' world, a 'cartoon world', etc.

I really don't remember much about them, but two things stand out - the creature from the swamp that the hero and damsel in distress encounters looks like a cheep gorilla suit with a zipper up the back and the 'swamp' looks like a studio set with plastic plants and trees; and 'singing western world', where the hero gets on his horse and tries to ride off into the sunset only to discover that the backdrop keeps moving but he's not making any progress (like the horse is stuck on a treadmill) because he has to sing 'the story so far' in order for the horse to move.

A trilogy of movies like that where they explore every cliche would be fun to watch.
Sounds kind of like this short film:

I have and the Nic Cage film is quite different from the actual story. It's not a bad movie in of itself, it's just not that great
I thought it was a pretty fun film and interesting concept it of itself.

As for the topic, I want more adaptations of Heinlein's works, like Space Cadet, Citizen of the Galaxy and Tunnel in the Sky.

Since its first publication 35 years ago, I've wanted a faithful adaptation of Armor, the powered battle armor novel written by the late John Steakley.

With the focus shift in the middle part, or without?

I'd love to see Arthur C. Clarke's 2061 and 3001 get made.

A few years ago, there was a rumor that Tom Hanks was interested in doing both of those. Personally, I have mixed feelings over both of those. I remember 2061 having large parts being just rehashes of 2010, where parts of the 2010 novel were just copied verbatim, and 3001 just felt too much like a retcon fantasy with little worth.

Here's a SW movie I'd LOVE to see made:

Alien Exodus.

Unfortunately the book wasn't ever finished (only the first three chapters were written) and was ultimately abandoned.

Were they actually planning on making Buckaroo Banzai Against The World Crime League, or was that just included at the end as a joke?

We don't know for sure, but it was probably the latter.

(There were rumors that Big Trouble In Little China was originally supposed to be the WCL movie but that was never actually a thing.)

Saga of the Pliocene Exile by Julian May
The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell
Childe Cycle by Gordon R. Dickson
Uplift Trilogy by David Brin

Yes this 1000 times but I'm sure Hollywood would find a way to fuck it up
Wasn't a miniseries of that announced and then never heard from again?
Yeah, there was one announced by Syfy in 2013, and another one from Amazon Prime in 2017. The 2017 one is actually recent enough, I'd say there's a very slight chance it could possibly still happen.
I started replaying the video game Horizon Zero Dawn, and I would love to see a movie set in that world. It's a fascinating world with a great backstory, that would be easy to carry over to a movie. With this kind of stuff I'd rather see a new story in that world rather a direct adaptation of the game, the world is more than big enough to find a different story for a movie to tell.

Horizon Zero Dawn led me to an old TV series Cleopatra 2525 because of the baileys and how they went crazy killing all the humans because their programming messed up and they were only supposed to fix the environment.

I'm still amazed that FEVRE DREAM by George R. R. Martin hasn't been filmed yet. Vampires on steamboats -- from the creator of GAME OF THRONES? It practically pitches itself.

The Champion Eternal books (Elric, Erekose, Corum, Hawkmoon)
The Corwin books of the Amber series
The Fafhrd and The Gray Mouser stories....though I found the later ones lacking
The Silmarillion (I find this book infinitely more entertaining than LotR)
Mooncop
The Silver John stories
The Dying Earth (Mainly the first book)
The tales of Zothique
A series of Greek mythology films that culminates in the Trojan War and it's aftermath in the Odyssey and Aeneid. But not done in the shitty modern "Clash of the Titans" style.

Another story I'd like to see adapted is Anathem by Neal Stephenson. I loved the concept of this book. It's just such an otherworldly book that putting it to screen would be amazing. In that book, science is treated more like a religion. Mathematicians and philosophers and scientists live together in convent-like communities, protected from corrupted influences from the outside world, and once in a decade as part of a rite, they're allowed out to venture outside the walls.

Still hoping that THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE WHEEL by R.S. Belcher, which is currently under option, actually makes it to the screen.

Hey all,

Can I throw in my choice for a criminally overlooked book series that really should be a theatrical feature with a top notch first class cast and serious FX money on it?

My choice:

The Dragonlance Chronicles series all 3 books
Dragons of Autumn Twilight
Dragons of Winter Night
Dragons of Spring Dawning

Its like LOTR but with the entire group on the adventure from beginning to end.

Please say I'm not alone. After the popularity of LOTR and the Hobbit. I was hoping this would happen.

I can't understand why not. Hopefully someday.
Some great choices on here. Some I knew and some I never knew.

Thanks for sharing sll. Keep em coming.
Cheers,
-Koric

It's been a lot of years since I've read those (Haven't seen the animated film of Autumn Twilight though the reviews were a bit iffy).

I wouldn't mind a live action series of films.

Thanks @John Clark!!! :)
Man, that travesty of animation for Dragonlance was rediculous. Utter garbage. But seriously, Dragonlance Chronicles sold really well, and I'm amazed that it seems to be forgotten by Hollywood.

@Hartzilla2007 I agree:
Also Jado's Dune would be one hell of a mind fuck please excuse the language. But I would support it Jado's Dune documentary was excellent. Jado himself was incredible to watch, both fun, funny and exciting.

I love his use of warriors. My WARRIORS he says. jado had the best team assembled for a film. So sad no to see his vision fulfilled. Would Jado have trashed Herbert's book. Absolutely. Beyond a shadow of a doubt.

But to quote the Klingon's "It would be glorious..."
Support Jado and David Lynch too transformative and innovative filmaker's taking chances I say. Never playing it safe.

If you are a fan Jado's Dune documentary was INCREDIBLE please see it.

The Pern books would be good, I read those to death at school. Dragonriders of Pern, what great fun that would be as a movie, spaceships and dragons, and it was fun.
