Movies that never were... Or things you wish were movies.

Fun thread hopefully.... Post links to some videos or short films you think would have made for unique and interesting movies.

I'm starting with a 2013 short film called "Land Of Giants" from Germany

Since its first publication 35 years ago, I've wanted a faithful adaptation of Armor, the powered battle armor novel written by the late John Steakley.

I've mentioned this before, but I want to see a good new version of The Lost World. Not the Jurassic Park sequel, but the original Doyle story. There have been other adaptations, but most of them have been bad and the last theatrically released one was an Irwin Allen cheesefest. It's overdue for a well-cast, big-budget movie that treats it like a huge spectacle.

I'm that same vein, I'd like to see 'The Land That Time Forgot' and 'The People That Time Forgot' by Edgar Rice Burroughs brought back to the big screen with some updated effects.

It's not that I don't like the originals, some of the miniature work is quite impressive and still holds up, but with CGI you can bring a wider variety of dinosaurs to the screen, instead of the puppets and suitmation.

In general, I'd love to see a return to these old kinds of adventure movies. No one seems to make them anymore unless it's part of a franchise like Jumanji.

I'm very much an oddity in that I know both these titles.... The Irwin Allen movie of The Lost World was a glorious stinker while Armor is a great story and could do with a faithful modern remake but I feel sad about that because they would try and turn it into a franchise, and ruin the whole story.

All movies are part of a franchise if they do well enough. The movies mentioned were part of that Doug McClure/Burroughs franchise :)

I want to see a behind the scenes movie about the making of Star Trek. Any of them would do but especially TOS. I use to think Kevin Spacey would make the perfect Gene Roddenberry. Today I think I would go with Taron Egerton assuming he could do the accent.

Yeah, but unless your name is Nolan, no one seems willing to take a chance on a big movie that isn't intended to start a franchise.

There's a few Michael Crichton books like Prey, Next and State of Fear that could be made into movies or a mini series. Micro (though a badly written early draft completed by another author and posthumously published) would make a fun movie. It's about humans being shrunk and facing insects.

One movie that was never made but absolutely should be is Del Toro's adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness. I'm not one for horror movies, but I could see that as being brilliant.

I thought they did do a movie of Next? Or was that a different movie? I have a scifi movie in my library called Next but not sure if it's a Chrichton story

From what I recall, very (very) different. The Next film was Nick Cage
precognition and the like
and was based of a Philip K Dick novel. How close it was to that is another question as I haven't read that particular book.

I'd like an Armor film too.

OH OK that's cool, an Armor film would be amazing if done right.
What the Next story you mentioned about?

I haven't read Next by Michael Crichton yet (though I think it's one of the genetic engineering ones?) but (at least according to wiki), Next (The Nick Cage film) was based on The Golden Man by Phillip Dick. Reading about that, it's the usual very loose adaption, though I haven't read that one either.

I have and the Nic Cage film is quite different from the actual story. It's not a bad movie in of itself, it's just not that great...

Oddly I love movies like that and Paycheck which is also a Philip K Dick story made into a movie. But I like that one a bit more.

I'd love to see a miniseries based on The Dog Master by W. Bruce Cameron. It's the story of early man and the domesticated wolf-turned-dog, and it's a very well imagined story.

Robert J. Sawyer's Neanderthal Parallax would make for a great series full of parallel-universe fun.

I would absolutely love to see Three-Day-Road by Joseph Boyden get adapted. Loosely based on the story of a real native-american sniper who served in WW1, who apparently was the most effective sniper during that war. The novel was absolutely spellbinding, and he had written a sequel. The sequel however, was more of a contemporary modern-day setting with some ancestors, but didn't nearly come as close in terms of being engaging. Strangely, they chose to make a movie of of this sequel instead of Three-Day-Road, and gave it the benefit of doubt and gave it a chance by watching it, but the movie didn't improve things.
