The German Lounge

^would that have been in Freiburg? That was the home my sister in law volunteered to work. She was there for 2 weeks. During the first week they had no protective gear whatsoever. In week 2 they got at least coats and surgery masks. Lab coats ought to be changed for treating every patient and the masks are strictly for one time use. However, they had to wear the same coat and mask all week. No wonder so many nurses and patients got infected.
And what really angers me is to see "civilians" running around in FFP3 masks they hoarded by the dozen while the medical staff has trouble getting at least one FFP2 per person (also meant for one time use but they get desinfected again and again until they dissolve).

Nope, not Freiburg, but same federal state. And yes, I've also heard of people walking around on the streets with these professional masks that are meant for hospital staff. I don't even want to know where they got them from... I've heard of cases where people actually went into hospitals and STOLE masks.

that's outrageous! The law should be altered to enable judges to give really severe sentences in such cases.
Btw, congratulations: BW has fallen back behind Bavaria in infection rates. Well done!

But as we already have 2 corona threads let's switch to some lighter topic. In the Dutch thread we happened to mention roller blades. I don't really like those. As a kid I used my grandpa's ice skates - they were made of metal and you could fasten them to your boots with little claws. And I had my own roller skates - very different from today's. They, too, were meant for putting them on over your normal shoes.
I admit that my generation spent most of our childhood with open knees but it never bothered us.
Is it just me or were our old toys far more demanding and unsafe but also far more fun than the modern ones?

I was a kid in the 60s :) Those were cool times: lots of freedom and few dangers. You could play everywhere.
I particularly loved the oil crisis in the early 70s: no cars around and we could play Völkerball* or Ball über die Schnur** in the street =)
Alas, nowadays there are so few children that both games aren't played anymore.

* Völkerball (nations ball) is played on a rectangular field that is divided into two equal halves by a middle line (usually drawn on the street with a shard of roof tile). The field size depends on the available space and the number of players.
There are two teams and a spherical ball the size of a volleyball (any ball that size will do). You try to hit an opponent with the ball. The opponents will attempt to evade your throw and to catch the ball and throw it at a player of your team. A hit player has to leave the playing field. The team who has any player(s) left has won.

** Ball über die Schnur (ball above the string) is also played on a rectangular field but instead of a middle line there's a string at about an adult's head heigth. (traditionally, you use someone's clothes line and get into trouble for borrowing it :D)
Again, you have two teams. You throw the ball at each other over the string in a way that makes it as difficult as possible for the opponents to catch it. If the opponents drop the ball or fail to catch it, your team gets a point. If you throw under the string or if the ball is out, your opponents get a point. The team wins that has the most points after a certain time or that reaches a previousely set number of points first.

90s kid (yay, Scooter, DJ Bobo & Blümchen) I work in the technology field but I am eternally grateful the majority my childhood occurred before the rise of smartphones and social media.

Now you can translate it for our international Trekkies. But it's content for the Neutral Zone......:D
