Aviation Geeks unite?! Anybody else care about planes here?

What's your level of interest in aviation?!

to think the Lancaster, York, Lancastrian and Lincoln all trace their roots back to an utter balls of aircraft known as the Manchester:)

Although the first commercial jetliner as the the Comet, it wasn't actually the first passenger aircraft to make an all jet flight.

Reading on the York lead to the Lancastrian, one of which made the first passenger flight under jet power in November 1946 (the aircraft had 2 x RR Nene and 2x RR Merlin so assume the latter weren't used in the flight).

The F-35.. not going to call it Lightning, this pudgy little flying Bradley doesn't deserve that name.. it is one of the few aircraft I don't like.
The pedant in me is twitching. ;)

The F-35 is the Lightning II.

The Lightning was the P-38.

@Santaman The aviators will probably stick the F-35 with it's own unofficial moniker anyway. Like Warthog for the A-10 or Viper for the F-16.

According to the Wikipedia article, a nickname in use for the F-35 in the USAF is "Panthner."

Why, yes I am aware of that but considering that the English Electric Lightning can out accelerate and outclimb a much newer F-15 and is capable of intercepting a U2 makes it (tadaa) lightning fast..:p;)

^^Which just means it was good at what it was designed to do, intercepting and shooting down nuclear bombers. Air combat isn't about that anymore.

And in a while air combat is going to be without pilots and use swarms of drones and anti drones and anti anti drones.. all controlled by pimply 14 year olds with a gaming addiction.. :p

Perhaps until jamming tech catches up and severs the link with the remote pilots. Then (and even otherwise), wholly onboard AI is a plausible next step, or at least partial AI integration for rapid decision loops. But also, in a highly jammed environment, some measure of at least nearby pilot presence could still be a thing.

Vought/LTV liked names with a swashbuckling and swords ring. The Corsair II should really have been the Corsair IV. For some reason some old timers in the fleet called LTV "Ling Toyota Varoom."
