Red dwarf: The Promised Land

Well, I liked it. Some negative on-line. Points for following up on first season plots, and the initial idea that holograms should be black and white.

It's not bad. But here is the show's weak point: When it does episodes like this and 'Back to Earth' it's focus is on story. In episodic form the focus is more on the comedy and sci-fi concepts which works far better. I think the concept that fits the show is something like Season 7, episodic format with the overall arc of trying to track down Red Dwarf.

Anyway, i'm not complaining. More Red Dwarf is always good but I thought we were promised a full series followed by a stage show? Oh well....

Wait, are they still looking for Kochanski? What happened to that arc?

I don't know what an objective review of this would be but speaking as someone who has watched for 30 years I thought that was pretty good at scratching (meow) the right itches: some funny gags, some fun adventure, some decent FX, some nostalgia and tugging of heartstrings and so on. Only RD can get away with that giant floppy made even better with they turned it around to reveal the sharpie label. I personally found that the most fully enjoyable of the later RD tales even if it wasn't as ambitious as some.

I don't know if it's dealing with coronavirus or what but I found the corny cat jokes way funnier than I should. That catflap gag killed me every time, the one guy really put his all into his entrances. And Luna was really cute as a ditzy cat.

I thought the Kryten costume worked better with Robert Llewellyn's bulk and felt more natural.

I agree. I loved it too. Great story and an extremely interesting look at what happened to the Cat people as alluded to in series 1. Also great to have Holly back as well and with a good bit more to do this time around. As for the whole Lister Kochanski thing? Well, that'll probably be fully explored in series13 when they hopefully eventually get to make it at some point.

Oh, c'mon... if that was S4 RD we would still be fellating Doug Naylor. The moonlight speech really hit me because I don't think I'm Rimmer... but I still think I'm more Rimmer than any other Dwarfer.

I finally watched last night and thought it was pretty good. It dragged in parts, and it's never going to be like the good old days™ but it was good to see the gang back together again. It may the state of things at the moment, but the warm feelings of nostalgia swept over me as I watched. :)

The floppy disc drive was fun, as was the circular gag with Rimmer asking Kryten to delete the memory of the distress call. Rimmer doing his Lister impression really cracked me up, as did him changing through all of his old holographic identities. It was probably the massive bulky H from series 1, followed by his cockiness when the Diamond drive finally activated. It was a little Ace Rimmer. :D

Thought it was great! I laughed out loud a lot of the way through.

Though I do enjoy them, my main criticism of the recent Dave series is that they made Rimmer less of a callous bastard. He is still antagonistic in those series but with much less vitriol. I thought the "Sod them!" scene was Rimmer back on point. The whole putting Kryten on report for listening to him was also pretty funny.

I'd hoped the Cat would interact with his people a bit more, but I suppose he doesn't consider himself a member of Cat society, he is a Dwarfer!

I give it a solid 8/10.

It is interesting how many girls the Dwarfers meet these days without even an attempt at copping off with them. OK, some of them are nutters, but that's not stopped the Cat before.

Lister obviously would be conflicted about using his Godhood to seduce either of the female cats (I can only remember Luna's name).

But given the seemingly pointless "last of the species, maybe we could sex-change the Cat so Lister can impregnate him" joke at the start, you'd think this might have had some followup.

Still, the Cat we know would have been ecstatic to see some females, especially from his own species.

"Does not work, does not clean, will have sex with anything "

Definitely a noticeable lack of interaction between Cat and the other cats.

Also, how is Rodon Cat's brother and still alive. The RD crew went into stasis and/or deep sleep at least twice for hundreds of years each time. I know, continuity isn't one of RD's strong points....or even a point.

Time dilation due to near-light. Kryten messed up the coordinates once with the time drive and they actually got back sooner than they thought?

Cats actually do have nine lives and can live that long?

The math tracks.

Season 2 + 5 years = Season 7b or the unseen season 7a.

But that would mean that Kryten from the double double future, is running around where on Red Dwarf who we can't see, in Stasis leak, doing mysterious "things".

Did double double Kryten sabotage Red Dwarf?

Just heard of this. Will have to look or wait for it here in the US. I hate that it's just a movie when they said it was going to be an entire season.

I wasn't aware they ever promised us a new season. The first thing I heard about this was "feature length episode".
