Your K-DRAMA thread

Let us know how you go with that, I've read mixed reviews though it is a classic.

I didn't include the trailer for Sky Castle because the official one was very dull and other ones contained spoilers.

I finished Abyss, looks like it's a one season show which is a good thing. Had it's moments and certainly kept a good pace.

Just watched the first two eps, next one is out in a couple days here. VERY GOOD. Haven't seen the original but the whole background political dramas involve North Korea, US military alliance with South Korea etc.. I don't know what political conflicts featured in the original but this is all Korea.
 
I have been watching this cop drama called Mrs.Cop now, still have one episode to go:

It has been quite good In overall, despite sometimes uneven writing. I like the lead actress..and the team work between the detectives has been fun to watch. It is good to see an older actress, who looks the part, as an series lead( Okay, around 50 is not that old really but it is not always like this in Korean dramas).

I have been thinking of posting here later a list of all the K-dramas I have watched so far, maybe that can give others some new ideas of what to see( Though some of them are older ones..).

I know this is a K-drama thread but I really need to recommend an excellent Chinese series( certainly one of the best ones they have ever made) called Nirvana in Fire. If you have never watched a C-drama before or need to watch just one..well, this should be it:

I've watched Signal which is a great, tight, tense, emotional time traveling cop show. Uses some actual crimes from the times too. Really enjoyed it, highly recommend.

Didn't watch all of Designated Survivor, got bored.

Currently watching Itaewon Class, it's pure soap 'n trope (did I just invent this phrase?) but it's fast paced and has some great scenery. Started watching it because there is a trans character which is a big deal for Korea. It's quite lively.

Finished Itaewon Class. Really enjoyed it, in fact there was one scene I teared up in (this is unusual for me). The pace of the show and the extremely great acting made it a winner. It's quite a soap, but it's also very engaging, great to look at too. The romance parts were minimal, there were simmering crushes throughout but it was never a focus.

Now I'm going through varying 'top 10 kdramas" lists for ones on Netflix. Even though viki has ones I've always wanted to watch (Goblin) I'm just exhausted thinking about trying to figure out how to access it from aus, and Netflix has so many kdramas I'll just stick with that.

There's a show on Netflix US called ''Rugal''. It's an action adventure/genre serial following a cop who is nearly killed after his wife is murdered, and is recruited into a top secret organization-Rugal, as they fight an evil cabal. The sci fi hook is that he's given artificial eyes granting him super vision...which come with a pesky AI that....well imagine if K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider were in your head instead of the car. And not as helpful. (it's not a comedy, I'm just poking fun at the premise).
Episodes can run over 60 minutes (whew, not used to that), and are added weekly after the show is broadcast in Korea.
 
yeah most Kdramas run over 60 minutes, and often the episodes vary in length. I've watched long series where the eps are on average 80 minutes. I just start the episode and stop it when I feel like it, I don't really watch them as episodes (this is on streaming).

Thanks for your suggestion! I see it was originally a web comic. There's been a few like that and it seems to work well. I will see if it's on netflix!

I am on Episode 5 ...watching with my teenager.

The absolute best historical drama is Dae Jang Geum also known as Jewel in the Palace. I strongly encourage everyone to watch

I had a look and that one is unfortunately not on Netflix. I've heard of it though.

I'm watching Crash Landing on You, one I resisted as it sounded very stupid lol. But after Itaewon Class I've felt like I want to watch some more ones that don't require a huge amount of attention. When I watched Mr. Sunshine which is another historical one that I loved deeply I was pausing the stream constantly and looking things up. Both words and history. So it did take a while. I barely looked up anything with Itaewon Class and I've only looked up a few words and NK foods with Crash Landing on You. It's a comedy mostly with the usual dramatic moments, nice scenery with the story moving between NK and Seoul. The plot moves quickly which seems to happen more in newer dramas which is great.

I never finished My Love from the Stars because NOTHING happened for so many episodes omg it was so repetitive..

I will watch this one after Crash Landing if I'm up for it and not watching more fluff instead. I was kind of exhausted by the intensity of Signal.

Yeah I could watch more than one at a time but they are all so freaking long !
 
I finally finished Abyss. I fell away from it for a while. I liked it overall, but it did get slow in the last few episodes. Had a rather odd ending, though I may have missed something there.

Currently watching a Thai version of Oh My Ghost. Loved the Korean original. The Thai actors don’t seem as good as the original.

I’v considered Itaewan Class, but I was kind of put off by some things I’v heard about racism in the show. I saw an interview with a cast member who referred to himself as “colored,” which was real eye roller , and he talked matter of fact lay about the racism in Korea. So,, not sure about this

I did finally see Parasite. I do recommend. Gives some interesting views on classism.
 
Itaewon Class might seem cringey in parts in how they deal with issues of racism as well as trans issues but it's an important show because having positive representation on a kdrama is not common at all. The black person presents as half Korean and the trans person is loved and accepted by her crew. Both of them come up against societal attitudes which may seem insane to non-Korean viewers, like what the heck is this?! Korea is a very homogenous society, and this has always been seen as a strength. There is a lot of bizarre ignorance about people of different races there. There's also a lot of sociological reasons for this that are not immediately obvious from casual viewing of a drama. Having a hugely popular drama chip away at that ignorance and insularity is a wonderful thing.

But yeah, you might have some culture shock.
 
Oh and as to Abyss.. I think a lot of Kdramas have odd endings, often unsatisfying :lol:

Yeah it kind of got too convoluted. I mean HOW many times did the characters end up in hospital, like every episode?!

Signal stays intense, with time travel, to the end.
 
Finally went back and finished Train to Busan (Netflix). Took some time to get used to K-zombies :lol:, but eventually I did. The last 3rd of the movie is great. Has a brutal ending. I do recommend.

Looks much more full on ! Not my usual viewing but I will certainly watch it as a sequel. I loved that Train to Busan was all on.. a train, and stations. I recently rewatched it and had forgotten how it ends so it was like watching it for the first time :lol:
