I'm going to save a DS9 episode as well: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume". I loved this episode when I first saw it, and still do. Bashir is one of my favourite characters, and I think the revelation about his past and biology actually works with what had been established up until then. Bashir's squirming, embarassed horror at having his parents, Richard and Amsha, on the station is just priceless! And Amsha is just so sweet. Despite what she was complicit in, I think she makes a wonderful mum!
Oh, and at the end, dear, sweet Rom running to catch Leeta before she goes!

Thanks, Sakonna! It's funny the things the brain will remember.

I will start my saving with "DISTANT ORIGIN". Not only is it an excellent episode, but it actually is a great example of a kind of directing style David Livingston always seemed to employ.

REALLY close close-ups. Like, the camera is directly in their face. Just look at the list of episodes, and you'll find it to be a hallmark of his.

There's always that one thing a director does that's typical of their style... some will prefer wide shots, some love group shots of the cast all the time, others love to use the crane for overheads, like Frakes. Livingston loved to let us know exactly how many pores are in every person's face.

Joking aside, he directed some excellent episodes, so it was actually tough to make a first save. (Seven of Five beat me to "THE VISITOR". )

Dang, he got busier far more than my ex! While Winrich Kolbe seemed to get the best (or made what he got into something better), I'll start by saving

DS9 Season 4: "Sons Of Mogh"​

Season 4 adds new life to the show by bringing in a Klingon friend for Dax where they can reminisce and gossip and both get beaten down verbally by Sisko because they're not in Burger King where they can have everything their way but still have to deal with the onions and tomatoes without being too much a pickle about it all. That was a great scene in a great episode, which has a tragic fate for Kurn: the first Klingon on screen to be shown as a suicidal alcoholic, no less. While Kurn's ultimate fate is as questionable as it is arguably wimpy, the bigger picture in this episode is how Worf is affected by all this - which is more powerful. Worf has that other catchphrase that he never speaks, "Today is a good day to be Vulcan".

His direction adds much to a great little action-themed plot that's well-acted, ramping up the threat and suspense right where it's needed. This story is one that almost pays homage to TOS as well, except they'd shove everyone into a conference room and not Ten Forward. The story is ultimately let down only by the frog farting symphony that's typical of the era, but everything else eclipses that with ease and deft.

If anything else to find to nitpick, you know I'll find something and here it is: "Ux-Mal" sounds too much like "Oo-Mox". Oops. More importantly, "Oo-Mox" is a word that is not Pig-Latin to describe the sound a cow makes... unless it's getting Oo-Mox. Oops^2.

The man did do great work with possession episodes (well, except "The Muse"...). Saving "Warlord", a favorite of mine in that subgenre. The whole dark-leather aesthetic of the aliens worked, Jennifer Lien was never better, it dabbles in queerness-while-under-mind-control without being offensive about it, which is astounding -- it's a winner.

The direction in this one is first rate. Shrouding Sela as silhouette worked beautifully. Yes, the voice sounded vaguely familiar. No, that's not important.

Livingston, I presume, really got bonus grades for tautness of scenes because several are on display. We see the time tested tropes of torture and seeing one friend forced to kill another, you name it. Especially as O'Brien and LaForge were not BFFs (unlike O'Brien with Bashir).

The reveal of the Romulan-as-Klingon was somewhat expected (and a given, since they could make a fake LaForge to go play on Risa).

But the best of the episode is about LaForge himself, especially the aftermath as discussed with Troi, who is exactly what this episode (and series, and people in real life) needed.

"Imperfection" is another Voyager highlight. It's one that never fails to make me tear up.

Though honestly "Picard" may have retroactively ruined this ep with that brutal torture-porn Icheb death. I've already tried to rewatch "Imperfection" once since that aired and quickly turned it off... I used to find this episode gloriously life-affirming, but it's now turned around and instead feels mean and cruel, knowing how it ends for these characters. Maybe the connection wouldn't be quite so strong if "Picard" hadn't explicitly referenced "Imperfection" in that death scene. Damn, did I HATE that scene.

I love this episode... it really gave Jeri Ryan something to work with and her acting prowess shines through brilliantly. It also resulted in (of course) some additional opportunity for Seven to grow into her human skin in her attempts to consider the crew's attempt to help her in the crisis and there was a nice closing scene between Seven and Naomi.

I almost saved "Scientific Method" last go-round, so I'll do that now! This episode is a great example of direction elevating a just-fine script. I rewatched this one recently and was surprised to LOVE it. It's all in the execution, because the story is nothing special.

Seven's unique Borg abilities being the only thing that could save the ship became such a trope, it's also fun to revisit this first time, where the crew still distrusts Seven, so there's greater barriers to her assuming the single-handed-savior role...

DS9’s “Homefront” is out. This show has aged the best of all the Treks IMO, and episodes like “Homefront” prove how prophetic and beautifully written it was. This episode almost felt like a season finale, with an intriguing and engaging plot interwoven with a wealth of utterly charming character moments. The trip back to Earth was wonderful, particularly for the Sisko family scenes. I adored Brock Peters as Joseph, and all three Sisko men had such chemistry you’d almost swear they WERE family. Nice, ominous cliffhanger too. I’m a little sad the second part was a bit of a talky disappointment in comparison.
