Parallels to Extinction (2018)

I just watched Extinction on Netflix, and was surprised by the parallels to Picard. It's basically Admonition: The Movie. It seems the topic is quite prevalent these days...

Maybe, but really, it seems to me that entertainment dealing with the end of the world, or humanity, or (insert your country here) has been a pretty steady thing for my whole life. And I know that contemporary peoples have thought various apocalyptic prophecies have been meant to happen "any day now" for a loooong time, too.

Wasn't the end of the world supposed to happen in 2012? Then 2013? Then 2014? Then 2015? Then 2016? Then 2017? Then 2018? Then 2019?

Well, I mean really, Christ's followers were standing around looking at their watches for a bit after he told them he was going to make a place for them in His Father's house. But eventually they got bored and hungry. ;)

It's about synths vs humans

The best synths are played by an 80s new wave band.

I also would have expected the new universe of PIC to use big words like "Synthetics". But it's a testament to the educational system, polysyllabic words just aren't understood by today's kids... nah, that don't sound right either. It's just hipster slang. I'm just grateful this isn't 1967 when we'd have a deluge of lines from McCoy and Kirk about how something is "groovy" or how "not to be a square, man". So the attempted use of informal language in this show is still a form of pandering. To an audience that isn't a more general one since this sequel* was aimed at an existing fanbase... even JL's family never called him by his initials...

* that isn't, according to its own maker's use of the terminology: https://comicbook.com/startrek/2019/12/29/star-trek-picard-next-generation-not-a-sequel/
