    Hey folks!

So, I thought this might be a fun exercise. My girlfriend is as huge of a geek as any of us -- and yet, somehow, before she and I began dating, she hadn't actually seen all that much of Star Trek.

I've been guiding her through the franchise, giving her a "Greatest Hits" tour of TOS and TNG. We finished TNG and the TNG movies just in time to watch PIC together -- but now, we're onto DS9!

For the earlier seasons, we're mostly following Max Temkin's guide entitled "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in 82.5 Hours." I think once we get into Season Three or Four, we'll just start watching everything.

In Season One, we've watched "Emissary, Parts I & II," "Past Prologue," "A Man Alone," "Q-Less," "The Nagus," "Battle Lines," "Progress," "Duet," and "In the Hands of the Prophets." So far in Season Two, we've watched "The Homecoming," "The Circle," "The Seige," "Cardassians," "Rules of Acquisition," "Necessary Evil," "The Alternate," and "Profit and Loss." We also actually skipped ahead and watched "The Wire" after "The Alternate" but before "Profit and Loss."

It's really cool re-visiting a show I've loved for the better part of 25 years with someone who's never seen it before, and we hit on an idea: Why not start a TrekBBS thread based on her reactions to episodes?

She's going to be replying to this thread under her own username with her mini-reviews, starting with "The Wire" and "Profit and Loss." Remember: She doesn't know what's coming, so please be careful not to spoil her!

(I had a close call with "The Wire." I didn't want her to know that Garak's first name was Elim, since that is the twist ending, but I accidentally referred to him as "Elim" one night! Fortunately she didn't hear me at first, so the episode's twist was preserved.)

Hopefully this'll be a fun thread for everyone. :)

Hi everyone! It's lovely to be here. (Any form of human interaction is welcome under the present circumstances, but I promise it isn't just that.)

For my inaugural post, one of my favorite episodes to date: "The Wire"!

Any episode featuring Garak and Bashir is a good time, so I loved this episode - not only for focusing on them and their weird friendship, but also for flipping their usual dynamic. Before now, Bashir has been the enthusiastic Watson to Garak's aloof and cryptic Holmes. (Garak has even less desire for attention, though, so Bashir gets to give the big whodunit speech at the end of "Cardassians.")

In this episode, Garak doesn't have a plan or hidden reserves of knowledge that help him; Bashir is the one who saves his life. Garak shouts (!) and throws furniture (!!), trying to goad Bashir into letting him die, but Bashir refuses to take any of the bait, instead retreating into professionalism. Still, the reversal isn't complete. Garak's apparently uncontrolled outbursts are anything but. To stay calm and determined, as he needs to be, Bashir is clearly suppressing his hurt. The episode is enormously effective at deepening both characters in a way that unfolds naturally from what we've seen before.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the exchange between them at the end, which is wonderful:

BASHIR: You gave me answers, all right, but they were all different. What I want to know is of all the stories you told me, which ones were true and which ones weren't?
GARAK: My dear Doctor, they're all true.
    BASHIR: Even the lies?
    GARAK: Especially the lies.

After watching the episode, Sci asked me which story I thought was the real one. I've thought about it, and here's my answer: all of them are true, especially the lies. That's what Garak said... what more do you want?

    Until next time!

Welcome. I just hope this thread stays spoiler-free for you, as many "first time watching" threads do not. :)

I'm gonna be reading over the thread before she looks at it to make sure it's spoiler-free, and she's not looking at any other threads or thread titles. We're gonna keep her spoiler-free dangit! ;)

    Welcome aboard, Verity!

I introduced my wife to DS9, as well. She loved it. I loved rewatching with her because even though I've seen every episode at 8 or 9 times before her, she saw a few things I didn't think of... mostly perspective and thought process types of things. It was almost like watching for the first time.

I won't spoil anything, but I will say you are in for a great ride.

I'm sure Sci has already recommended this, but read A Stitch in Time by Andrew Robinson.

I literally showed it to her on the bookshelf. Obviously we gotta wait until after she finishes the series though. :)

We watched "Blood Oath" the other night. She'll have a mini-review for that and "Profit and Loss" coming up soon.

My wife was a Voyager fan when I met her, and I a DS9 fan.

We first watched DS9 and she became also a big fan, then we started with Voyager but quit after season 4 because she didn't like it anymore, I never liked Voyager. And Enterprise we gave up after season 1.

    Hi Verity !

There's a lot of wives and girlfriends being referenced here for a nerdy hangout !

My wife had actually seen Star Wars at the cinema about as often as I had when we met. And as I saw it 13 times on release, that impressed me.

She's enjoying Discovery and Picard but I'm still a bigger Trek fan. She likes DS9 but hasn't seen it all. As a big Rat Pack fan she does love "Badda Bing" though !
